New pack came out a couple of days ago in fact.
It added the ability for you to have an avatar/person exist out of the ship.
So you can walk around in stations now, going to stores, corporate offices, etc.
Even the ship (and you can decorate your captain's quarters if you wish).

So many choices! Hahaha. I'll probably hope around to all of these options until GW2 comes out. STO first, then Eve.

Another thing I like about eve is that built in there is a market to buy subscription with in game currency.
It is entirely possible to reach a point where you can make far more than enough in a month to pay for your subscription through that.
Or if you want to go the other way (use real money to buy in game currency by selling these in game timecards), you can do that.

Thought I'd show some of the ship's interior you can walk around in. At present, you can only customize your bridge, and select the size of the interior.
However we've been promised that we'll be able to completely customize our ship's interior utilizing the already existing Foundry system, maybe as soon as next month. We'll even be able to set a ship uniform for all the npc's aboard.
These were taken aboard my Deep Space Science Vessel:
Bridge
Crew Deck Lounge
Sick Bay
Captain's Quarters
Engineering
Engineering Lab
Transporter Room
Observation Lounge during First Contact mission
Science Vessel in warp
Away team
Q visiting Earth Space Dock
Ask him how powerful he is and see what happens!

I'm sure it's fun, but it does look very dated. Also why are people in your crew almost naked?

Bahaha, must be his personal preference.

Dated?
One the pictures don't do the game justice, since Imageshack limits me to 100 mb per pic.
Two, compared to which game? I've played WoW, EQ2, LOTRO, EVE Online, Assassin's Creed, Fallout 2...and Star Trek Online's graphics and gameplay are superior to all MMO's out there, with the possible exception of Rift. And Rift is newer.
Three, find me another MMO game out there that let's you command four highly-customizable npc's that fight and heal by themselves on a regular basis. I don't even think you'll find RPG's that let you do that. Take your time looking.

Well they are women on the one hand lol. On the other hand, they are dressed for a Foundry mission I'm creating involving the Terran Empire from the mirror universe. The women in those pictures are all wearing Terran Empire uniforms from the original Star Trek.
Edit: This what those same women usually look like:
The Foundry let's you make your own missions, and STO rewards players for completing three player-created missions with a daily mission that gives experience and level-appropriate rewards.

I know you love the game I've seen you post about it a lot. I've also read a few reviews that don't paint a pretty picture.
As far as finding a game where I can control NPC's I don't really care to, and don't see a point in looking. From what I've read the space combat sucks and is the same wash and repeat game play.
On some sites where the players review the game it scores a 2.5 out of 5.

Probably from release. The game has changed a lot, and is about to undergo a sea change in ground combat next month, when Season Four releases.

It would be pointless to look anyways. There are none.

WTF? possibly the best part of the game, and the best space combat to be found anywhere. EVE is close, but no cigar. SWTOR didn't even try to equal it.

Some of that is justified, but find me an MMO that doesn't have this, especially at lower levels? Again, Season Four is right around the corner and it is adding a ton of new features to the game.

Again, prolly from release. I don't ask anyone to take my word. Try it for yourselves, especially after Season Four debuts.
That's all I'm asking.

Cmon man, you got love for STO but this is ridiculous. It isn't the greatest game ever that you paint it to be. Do you have stock in the game or something??

Account made and downloading now.

WTF? I post asking people to try it and make up their own mind...and you post this?
Does not compute.

Good man! Hope you enjoy!
Keep in mind that next month there will be all new starting zones and tutorials. Downloading now will give you additional perspective though.
Also next month you will be able to change ships from within your own ship's shuttlebay. Just the first step towards a totally customizable ship interior.

I have played it, I tried it after release. It was total garbage. I see they made some improvements to the core gameplay but they had to go the "freenium" route to even get people interested again.

Then your experience is outdated. I just started playing a little more than three months ago, and from what I'm hearing from long-timers in my fleet is that the game is better than it has ever been.
Cryptic is a small studio, and a lot of what has been added in the last two seasons would have made for a much bigger release. The recent acquisition by Perfect World should help with the bottom line.

Huh? It's a subscriber game. I'm paying $14.99/month. Many people, including several in my fleet, have purchased lifetime subscriptions for $299.99.
STO Subscription options
Possibly you confused by the Cryptic Store?
Nothing really worthwhile in the store can't be earned in game as well, with the exception of costumes and bridge officer. And those are purely a matter of taste. Cosmetic only.
Posted on 6/23/11 at 6:39 pm to TigersOfGeauxld
I was wrong about F2P, I saw that one of Cryptic's other MMOs was going that route and assumed it was a blanket mandate.
JPH, be sure to give your opinions on it, I'm curious to see what has changed.

Will do. I'll bump this in a few days.

This review here is pretty fair, and pretty recent.
Armchair General
Keep in mind a lot of the issues noted in that review are being dealt with in the next season, which rolls out sometime next month.
The admirals of my fleet were informed by the devs, as I imagine all the admiral's of the biggest fleets were informed, that fleet starbases will be implemented sometime in season four.
So there is a big push for everyone in the fleet to contribute to the fleet war-chest. We weren't given specifics, but the speculation is that it will involve a huge one-time payment of several million energy credits. Monthly rent may also be involved.
There will be ships implemented in the future that can only be created at these starbases.

Oh and one thing...anyone who wants to try the game, feel free to look me up, I'll help you anyway I can.
I don't think trial accounts can open trade windows, or receive mail, so no money or items from me unfortunately. At least that was the way it was when I had my trial.
But I'll be happy to offer advice, help with missions, or even just shoot the breeze. Love to invite you aboard my ship, show you around, and you can see how to setup your trophies.
This pic here:
...shows the trophy wall in your crew lounge.
There are defaults you can put up even if you haven't earned better ones yet.
My handle in-game is @Halaran.

Alright I'm to the point in the demo where I have to do 3 player made quests but it says I can't because I am on a demo account. Is this the end of the demo or is there a quest hub some where?
