re: PC Gamers: Online Multiplayer Games MMO or Not

Guess that was the end. Well I can't give much of an opinion with so little game play. 99% of the demo was instanced. Here's what I think from the little I played.
First the ground combat was clunky. Maybe it was because the animations are so bad I donno I just know it wasn't much fun. Also the ground graphics aren't really that good. The lighting is pretty good, but the textures are horrible. The player models are pretty bad, and it also isn't very optimized.
The space part looked pretty good and I can see that the exploration could be pretty fun. As far as ship battles I don't think it's my cup of tea, but it might be because I only had 2 attacks. It just feels like I'm driving a tank and slowly following and circling another ship for a few min. until it blows up.
I did give it a shot, and this is my honest opinion. I'm not much of a trekkie and that could be one of the reasons I didn't get into it. I could see myself enjoying the space exploration part, but I don't know how long that would last. I read it has no end game.
You should download the Rift demo now and check it out.

Alright I'm to the point in the demo where I have to do 3 player made quests but it says I can't because I am on a demo account. Is this the end of the demo or is there a quest hub some where?
I'm guessing you took all the missions from the Available missions tab, and that was one of them.
There isn't a quest hub per se. You just hail Starfleet and check what missions are available. from wherever you are, and turn them in the same way. No running to a quest giver to turn in.

Yeah that was the only option I had left.

Not sure what class you played, or what boffs you used here. There are several strats and boff combinations you can use. I've posted some in this thread.
As for the graphics, they are better than WoW and EQ2, and on par with LOTRO, so I'm happy with them. Rift is a newer game.

Yup, you do start out slow in the starter ships, but it picks up quite a bit when you get to choose your specialty ships...escort, science vessel, cruiser.
It's no different in this respect than any other MMO out there, you pay your dues, and get rewarded later with better gear.

I appreciate your comments and understand why it wouldn't be for everyone. But the game isn't a photograph, it's a motion picture. There are big changes a couple of weeks away, most of them to the ground combat you don't like.
There's a good preview of that on STOked
And keep one thing in mind: this game is unique in that it offers both space and ground combat. And you get to assemble and configure your own team, not just your character.
EVE Online is all space combat. The new Star Wars MMO has very limited space combat. Star Trek has both, and is far and away the most polished game, MMO or RPG, that has both.
And about the endgame...I wrote earlier about the player-owned starbases and the new ships that will be built with them.

Already did. I'm done with fantasy. I like being part of a future where I can fly to new worlds and investigate them, in a ship of my choosing and configuration.
To each his own. I think when word gets out about how much the game has improved next season, it's going to go viral.

Actually, I think you can pvp. And you can drop into any system and there will be a random mission for you. And there are all those deep space contacts to fight as well.
Did you see where you can visit your bridge, and redo missions from your ready room? That's in case you want yet another reward, or another of the same reward.
Part of leveling up is re-equipping you and your bridge officers. there are a number of missions you do that give you ship weapons and equipment, and gear for you and your crew. Multiple mission, in fact.
Some though, you want to redo for another choice.
Did you visit your bridge, wander through your ship? And did you know you can make another character, of another discipline?
The trial never ends. You can replay it as much as you want.

Hmm, it could be that my memory is faulty, but it did seem that I could leave Earth Space Dock, which is where I'm pretty sure you warped to at the end of the tutorial.
Hang on to the trial, or re-download it after Season Four launches, there are new tutorials and starting zones going in, and you'll be able to play the Klingon side as well.
There are supposed to be missions set in the Sol system itself, and you should be able to visit Starfleet Headquarters on earth at the end of the tutorial.
Edit: You've made me curious. I'm going to re-d/l the trial and see if there have been changes.

Eve Online is officially the home of the biggest dick move in the history of online gaming.
(also has a spot at 7 on the list)
LINK
And yes, for those who are familiar with Eve history, it was the EveBank scam.

On the Ground
Just click the things that shimmer. If you can, try and shoot from the side or back, as this gives extra damage. Stunned targets take more damage as well, since they can't dodge.
Remember to use your skill points for you and your bridge officer. If you go science, take the healing kit. As far as your first bridge officer, I recommend the tactical officer.
In Space
Goto Controls, Key Binds. Bind Full Impulse to the B key. Reason is it's right next to V, which is the scanner key. When one of your shields gets low, turn the ship so a different shield faces your opponent.
You probably should have delayed your trial for a couple of weeks. Season Four is about to roll out. Some of the new stuff is on the test server, and it's amazing.
You would have loved the new over the shoulder target reticule and the fire by mouse look.
Oh well, enjoy your trial.

Funny thing is, they were mentioned twice on that list.

WoW was too FWIW.

quote:
The ultimate dickery? He posted a 15-minute video bragging about how he got away with it, mocking his loyal employees at EIB, enemies who failed to stop him and the suckers who basically paid for a second job -- essentially paying for the right to have their money stolen. Understand: Cally is now officially smarter than every Bond villain put together, because he found a way to give an expository monologue without getting killed.

True dat. I hate WoW with a passion now. I can't believe I spent so long playing a game that sucked so much joy out of my life as that game did.

How long would it take to make 60 billion isk? Im curious because Titans sell for $2,500.00.

A pretty long time. My corporation earns about 500 million - 1 billion per mission but that is split between anywhere from 4-6 people. I'd imagine it would take ages to build up a titan and protect while you are doing so.
Posted on 6/30/11 at 2:12 am to sbr2
A titan isn't something that you usually own as an individual. Simply too much is needed to build/maintain it. Same pretty-much goes for all supercapitals.
They are strategic assets more than day to day playthings. Especially the Titan....its designed to be a forward logistical base able to send jump battle fleets with it. It is designed to provide reinforcements back to the frontline ASAP, allowing pilot clones to be revived in the ship, and allowing them to pull a ship to fly out of the Titan. They transitioned the supercarrier to a combat role to emphasize that point. You keep those vessels safe for the day that it comes to being do or die to save your space.
The biggest vessels I see folks use for ratting/complexing/etc were carriers.
I would say though you are going very good getting ~100 million isk an hour. Higher is achievable, but you are talking specialized skillsets that took years to train, with super specialized ships that are lavishly equiped, and you are in 0.0 space that you can use.
But here's something to keep in mind when it comes to supercapitals:
-The immense cost (billions)
-Getting your hands on a BP in order to build the fricker (further billions, if even possible....corporations with the BPOs don't readily hand them out
-You need to obtain sovereignty of a 0.0 star system, with a strategic infrastructure upgrade allowing the construction of capital ships (will cost around a million a day with all of the other upgrades you will want to have up...along with an inital investment of around 500 million in destroy able assets
-You need to put up a Death Star build large POS tower with the only thing that isn't a weapon is a manufacturing array for supercapitals (at least a billion in assets right there that can be destroyed)
-You need months of skill training to be able to start construction
-You need weeks to build all of the pre assembly components for the ship
-You need 2 months to build just one Titan, during which hostiles can see you attempting to build it, and destroy the POS manufactoring one.
-When it is built, supercapitals CANNOT dock in stations. It must be left out in space, usually in a POS, which at least provides some security (or at least a time delay of destruction).
So like I said....not really an individual effort/ship. Not saying there aren't any examples of them.
Just that they are rare.

I'm intrigued by EVE might try the 14 day trial. My computer is a two year old laptop, will it run on that? I ran lotro but I had to turn the graphics on low to very low and it just wasn't the same experience.
Posted on 6/30/11 at 9:19 am to fouldeliverer
It's pretty easy to run. Most of the screen is black. :-)
Posted on 6/30/11 at 9:22 am to fouldeliverer
They recently had a graphical update but it should run on low setting pretty well.
