I think he should go with at least crossfire or SLI if hes going x99.

Yep, that was my main gripe, other than the fact that he'd get a much better value from a 290 vs. the 780. But of course, his source of information is going to steer him towards the highest amount of brand recognition. There's just a huge chunk of blind followers of particular brands -- Nvidia or AMD fanboyism isn't even as dangerous as those who think everything from Corsair is better than the competition. Corsair-branded RAM, SSD, PSU, Cooler, and Case + ASUS motherboard + Intel/Nvidia or AMD/AMD = Safe fanboy assumption build.
Second gripe is he shouldn't be wasting the build on a 1080p 60hz monitor.
Third gripe was the overpriced Corsair RM series PSU and the premium on the Corsair vengeance RAM over the slightly slower G.skill kit (which appears to be easily overclockable to the exact specs of the corsair, but $100 less)
Then the motherboard being a bit excessive, which he relented on and chose a more sensible board and a separate wireless card.
I didn't discuss the case choice, because there's nothing objectively sound enough to overrule the aesthetic preference.
And I suggested 8.1 over 7, but I'm sure you know what the response was.

Who is the X99 build for? Those 5820Ks aren't overclocking well so you're better off with a 4930K for gaming.
Second, Gigabyte? Only go with MSI, ASUS and EVGA IMHO.

Yeah, he had some crazy idea that Gigabyte stood out among the rest, which was odd to me. Usually, the motherboard brand myths are related to ASUS or some other brand. Gigabyte has never even been on my radar as a particularly stand-out company, neither good nor bad. The features that were driving up the cost of the Gigabyte are not really that interesting either -- Dual LAN and a Wifi card, and some onboard RJ45.

They have some of the best mobos, and their WF3 cards are amazing

Tell your friend that I have a 1440 IPS monitor for sale under $150.

Are HP monitors actually good? There's a great sale on one on NewEgg 25" 1080p IPS, and it has a solid 5 egg review score.
Thinking about grabbing it.

FOr what price and what latency? Is it matte, matte monitors suck.
I'll sale you a 1440 IPS for probably the same price.

Okay in Windows install and bios it's not detecting my hard drives and bios says I only have 4GB of 1600 ram when I have 8GB of 1866
I don't remember plugging anything sata related into the mobo, but also don't see any unplugged cables.

You need SATA cables plugged into the drives and motherboard..
RAM might be another issue to deal with later, assuming you dont just need to reseat the modules and make sure they're snapped in properly.
EDIT: have to get the kids from daycare, so it might be a little while

Found the Sata cables got them all plugged in and moved the RAM into the other slots. About to try again.

Keep an eye on your cpu temp. If it gets higher than you're comfortable with, I'll send you that cooler.

8GB 1866 RAM detected and the SSD and HDD both detected too good to go! Installing Windows.
