Built in summer of 2015. i5@3.1 (I think 4000K?); can’t remember mobo anymore; 16GB ram; 970 graphics; 128SSD/1TB HDD; can’t recall power source.

Not at my house or I’d look up the things I can’t remember

ETA: also going to upgrade monitor from 10yr old LG 1080p

Yeah might want to do a whole system build. PSU might still be okay.

Yeah I think that’s the way to go. A lot has changed in 5 years. I felt like my build was about in the upper-middle class when I did it, so it definitely makes sense that it’s time. Think I will try to do a better job of incremental upgrades this time around so I’m not dumping another wad of cash out in another 5-6 years.

Performance jump between a 970 to 3080 is going to be staggering

Would you take 100fps 4k over 165fps 1440p?

id rather the higher frames but if a system can do 100fps at 4k then it could do 165 at 1440p.

My goal is frames in games. If I can reach max the monitor can do, I'll up the graphics in games.

Depends on the game, some games I do 90 and roll back eye candy and some games I do 60 with everything turned up.

MSFS I'm doing 30fps, which seems dumb in a sim but I'm flying bush planes and Cessnas. The frames don't matter in that game like you would think, the realism is much more rewarding.

All 2160

But all you play are FPS, right?

YT: Level1Techs - Allyn Malventano makes a guest appearance!

I miss Allyn on PCPer, but he works for Intel now.

I imagine hu is similar to me in this regards, yes.

I'd much rather 144/165@1440 than 100/4k. Those frame drops are very noticeable imo

Comes down to what you are looking for.

110Hz to 144Hz is not noticable, just like 120 to 144hz.

Give me dat 4K HDR glory with adaptive sync all day.

Four 3090's in SLI for the 3 games that support it and you're ready to roll.

No more SLi, with 3080s.. think 3090s will do nvlink, but honestly no games support it. I went SLi ever gen since Little Kepler, even with my Titans, until 2080Ti. No games support it anymore, not at launch and maybe months down the road, which is too late.

It's not true 8K, idt. Per PCper, they are thinking it is some form of DLSS.

I think this is my next move unless I can get a 240 1440p and have a card that can do it within a reasonable price

Is there is even a monitor like that.

Absolutely. I can tell from 100 to just 144hz.

100 dropping to 60 is amazingly worse than 144 going to 100.

It has serious flicker issues with gsync and freesync. Made the LG GN950 an easy choice between the two.

Went with the Netgear Orbi wifi 6 mesh system AX4200, got a good deal on it for almost $100 off.

What do we do for monitors these days?

On my last build I got a sweet Korean 27" 1440p IPS pass through and pixel perfect.

Is IPS still the way to go if you aren't competitively fpsing?

I know it needs to be G-sync if I'm getting a 3080/3090. What about HDR?
