For 2020 IMO and the one I've got pre-ordered on Amazon the best for the money is the LG GN950. They are sold out and don't stay in stock long as they just came out, last BestBuy stock was a couple days ago and was gone by end of day.

You basically need an RTX 30 series monitor to take advantage of 4k 144 FPS tbh.

BTW - sort of fun game I've got into lately is playing Middl e Earth - Shadow of War.
It received a lot of shite as a sequel to Shadow of Mordor, but its fun as hell. Story is pretty much non-canon LoTR (some minor canon elements involved), but is a fun hack-and-slash game with some challenging AI in the Nemesis system.
Graphics look super amazing all maxed out with my 2070 Super too

No doubt, that's why I'm getting the 3080 equivalent AMD card when it drops.
That and PS5 in November, planning on using the PS5 mostly on the new monitor as well. Doubtful I do Zen 3.

Looks like HDMI 2.1 monitors are coming this "holiday season" which is needed for 4k 120+hz. What I read was that current display port can't do 4k 120+ hz without compression. Seems like it would be best to wait for one of these.

I think I will pull the trigger on a monitor tonight.
But here is a Pup-date with new Nephew (1st nephew)

No HDMI 2.1 isn't needed, DisplayPort 1.4 does it with no compression, it's called DSC, all new GPUs support it in current Navi and Turing.

Huh? DSC - Display Stream Compression
Posted on 9/6/20 at 7:16 pm to Raz
Correct, DSC is visually lossless.
And don't get me started on 144Hz for PS5 as if games are ever going to be pushing that on that thing.

So between now and the holidays, it looks like the following is all coming out:
AMD Ryzen 4000 series
nVidia 3000 series
AMD Big Navi
Monitors with HDMI 2.1
Did I miss anything important?
How the hell am I supposed to plan a build right now?
Edit to remove Intel gen11

Tiger Lake is just mobile.
And HDMI 2.1 is not needed for PC's with a modern GPU.
Speaking of HDMI 2.1, apparently LG OLED's from both 2019 and 2020 have an issue with VRR and they don't know if it's fixable. Big yikes for LG. LINK

DSC is great but it's still going to be better to not have to rely on compression. Even if it isn't visually noticeable, should have less input lag.

Also if Intel isn't going to have 11th gen out this year, then that simplifies things for the CPU. I'm not seeing a reason not to go PCIe 4th gen.
The people who are saying "nVidia did all their performance testing on PCIe 3rd gen" and "you don't need PCIe 4th gen" are the same people saying "It's only a 2-7% drop in fps from PCIe 4th gen to 3rd gen".
Seems like if I'm not paying a crazy premium to go with AMD and PCIe 4th gen, that's the way to go. And even if it isn't a huge difference today, you'll be better future proofed if you want to upgrade later.
Or am I missing something?

Eh, DSC input lag is basically nothing with how it operates. Not an issue or anything to worry about waiting for HDMI 2.1 in 2021. Hell DP2.0 next year will make it obsolete on PC anyways and it nearly doubles the bandwidth of HDMI 2.1.
quote:
DSC is a linear stream compression that is only a single pixel row buffer equalling one horizontal scan rate. For a signal of 160KHz horizontal scan rate in Custom Resolution Utility (160,000 pixel rows per second), the latency of DSC at one end is 1/160,000sec. Even the temperature difference of 18 degrees C versus 20 C slows down an LCD pixel response (and thus lag) FAR MORE than this DSC overhead.

Zen 4 is PCIe 5.0 which is a substantial jump over the short lived 4.0 (double the transfer rate), so I wouldn't worry about that. I believe DDR5 too.

But as a gamer we make bonus from this..
Wtf is this sentence. I swear correct
It should have said " But as a gamer we get no use from this.."
