The point of placing you lower than last season is to make you climb. Riot has said this multiple times. Like it or not, it's what makes ranked work. If people got placed back to their original positions, many would just stop playing ranked. Why continue if you've already reached the goal at the start.
I'm in low gold. I will end this year low gold, just like last year and the year before that. I'm not going any higher. If I got placed in gold at the start, I'd have no reason to play ranked.
Yes, many would try to go higher, but a lot of people would not because they know they've reached their peak, or don't feel the need to try anymore.

44 games isn't a ton. That has averaged out for me to about 1 a day for the 1.5 months I've been playing. I think I was placed a little low compared to where I was last season went (5-5 in placements I think), but my MMR is high and I already skipped 1 division, and I'm sure I will skip another when I am done with my next promos.
Riot also has the MMR trick built in. If you are consistently winning more games than losing, and go on win streaks, your MMR will rise thus giving you more LP for wins, and less negative LP for losses. They are trying to put you back where you were last season, in their own little way.

If you are jungling try to always know where the other jungler is. If he is bot side ganking and killing your bot lane and you aren't.. you better be doing something important somewhere else or you and your team is falling behind.
First turret gold is also important. Get a kill somewhere early in the game? Push with your jungler/laner to try to get a first turret. Just know when you have an advantage and press it.

I know how MMR works and had been playing ranked since before seasons were a thing. It may come as no surprise to you I much preferred the old MMR system to the current LP/promotion/tier system.
You think playing 1.5 months isn't a lot, I do. Its subjective. When you take into consideration people who think like me haven't been having fun even when we win, 44 games is torturous. The game is simply too frustrating to enjoy. I have limited game time available and prefer to not spend it either losing because of potatoes or having to try way too hard because of potatoes. Neither is fun for me anymore and there are better alternatives these days.
It's not necessarily entirely the fault of league; the MOBA genre lends itself to these tendencies.

I really have to agree with dcrews. I probably have played completely safe and made smart decisions in 80% of my ranked losses in the past two weeks.
I can tell when I'm going to win a ranked game by 10 min into the game, sometimes I can tell in champ select. I'm not great, but I feel I have no say in if I win or not. I guess that's because I play mid, I don't know.
I have a solid KDA on my mid champs, somewhere in the 9/4/9 range on average of my champs, and have a 50% total win rate with almost 300 games played.
Example: This morning, played Corki mid into Velkoz, was winning CS, I back to buy with about 1400g and Im running back to lane when Yi pings that he is going to gank. I get between tier one and tier two turrets and he ults and runs in, tower dives and gives my laner a kill. Flames me that I didn't get there fast enough. If the timing was wrong, he shouldn't have gone in and went back to farming or gank another line. Somehow it's my fault that he made a bad decision.
Stuff like that is what gets me tilted and makes ranked not even worth it. I'm back to S3 and don't even want to bother trying before the early Nov season end.

If any of you really want to get to gold by seasons end, but dont think you can in soloq, play ranked 3s. I went from bronze 3 to gold in just a few weeks.
The meta is different so look it up before you start. Play lane dominant champs and snowball. If you jg, play champs with good early ganking.
If you can't carry in this game mode I don't know what to tell you. You only have 2 other teammates.
The matchmaking is pretty even. You will the occasional game where you get matched against a premade of plats, but not often.

Can confirm this exists. I was roughly 40 games below .500 hardstuck silver 5/fringe bronze demotion from not bothering to learn new champs in normals. When I started making a conscious effort to climb and went on these 11, 7, 9 game winstreaks in quick succession, my mmr and lp gains skyrocketed. I'm still 10 games away from being .500 but even in silver 2 I'm gaining more LP than I'm losing. So even with a losing winrate I'm still gaining more than losing just because of how streaky I've been lately.

My favorite is when the enemy team spawns Herald and my team ignores it while I'm spamming pings asking for help. Then they get mad at me for losing two towers and dying

That's what I've been doing. I stick to mid. Lately it's been all Vlad, Talon and Lucian. To start the season I played 180 games of Kay at 55% win rate.
I'm sure it's decision making but how do you improve that? If I knew it was a bad decision, I wouldn't do it. Know what I mean?

I haven't vented in a while but I just got into my first ranked game of the day, level 3 gank top, get first blood on gp for my darius, go mid immediately and kill diana. We're 2 kills up before rift even spawns. Somehow gp tp's back to top and instantly kills Darius and my ahri loses her mid tower to a behind diana in under 10 minutes. jinx falls 70 cs behind Jhin. I just...wow.
