AC 2 is all time favorite for me even if I can't stomach the controls now. I could never get into Valhalla but Origins and Odyssey are so good. I've played a little of Origins lately and everything about that game is money.

Yeah, there was a LOT of junk back in the 8 and 16 bit days. Much moreso than today.
Worst part about it was they were still happy to ship and unfinished or broken game back then. But unlike now you were just SOL and had to deal with it. At least now you might get a patch to fix stuff.

I'm the opposite with asscreed. I've loved Sparta and Vikings more than previous
assassin creed has a peak and valley history for me
1 was medicore, proof of concept really
first 2 ezio games awesome,
last Ezio and 3 sucked
black flag great,
unity sucked
origins/greek great
Valhalla goodish to mediocre
if that history holds true then the next planned stuff is in trouble

Why hasn’t Assassins Creed released anything in two years? When’s the next?

they have a strange plan laid out for the next stuff.
in the next year or two multiple games will come out
i think 1-2 smaller kind of older traditional type AC games.
a bigger one thats more like the modern ones (origins, Valhalla)
and then they got some type of live service game coming out

Think Assassins Creed Mirage is next year. 9th century Baghdad is the location this time.

The last two years there are have only been a handful of games I looked forward to and liked. It used to be that there were three to four a year I waited for to come out.
I have played my favorites games/series too much to play again.
I'd suggest trying new game genres. For example, the game that I have spent the most time overall on (excluding mmorpgs) is Oxygen Not Included. It starts off fairly simple but as you progress, the depth and complexity ramp up. Every time you play, it's different as the world is generated. Another game like this would be Prison Architect.
Then there are more simple games that to me are just entertaining like Vampire Survivors, Darkest Dungeon, Faster Than Light etc.
For me, the most fun games are ones I play co-op with friends. Have been playing Deep Rock Galactic, Aliens Firetream and Back 4 Blood the past year.
A good mmorpg is the best imo though. I'm eagerly awaiting Ashes of Creation. Though I'm also dreading it... If it's really good as everything they are showing, I'm going to spend so much time playing it.

Yeah fork that game, I spent hours trying to beat it and never could.

I can really get behind this post. All I play these days is a 20 year old MMO freeshard of Dark Age of Camelot.
Posted on 10/6/22 at 3:56 pm to DoUrden
Haha yeah, I've only beaten it once and that was probably after 20-30 hours. I still play it occasionally to try unlock the other ships.

DAoC is easily one of my top 10 games of all time. I still have hope that Camelot Unchained will be a worthy successor.

i made the mistake of going down the rabbit hole recently to figure out wtf is going on there. Somehow its still in development, being funded by who the frick knows.

Especially in the 8 bit era. Difference is, back then you could rent a game for a weekend to give it a try and only be out 5 bucks instead of 50. Usually rental and retail places didn't order many of the garbage games because they wouldn't sell. So you had a bit of a filter and try before you buy system back then that I think helps keep the goggles rose colored.

And adjusted for inflation, $5 in 1990 is worth over $11 now. Still good with paying $11 for a weekend game rental?
And by the way, adjusted for inflation, SNES games would cost like $90 today

Oxygen Not Included.
Definitely a time sink, but if you're not engineering minded, the game has a steep, steep learning curve. Steeper than Kerbal Space Program, IMHO.

I don't think PA has nearly the depth of ONI or KSP, or even Rimworld. It's insanely fun, though. It's a different take on a base/city builder, for sure.
The modding community for these games is massive as well, which allows a lot more "game" for your money, if you are so inclined to mod.

I've thought about that many times. The 8 and 16 bit eras were expensive AF. If games cost 90 then shite yeah I would be paying 11 bucks to try before I bought. You could get through most of them in a weekend anyway. Most of the games I ended up owning were the ones that were good for multiple replays.
It was a different time but still a better time IMO. There is no going back to that though. Players have become as spoiled as the game companies. Glad I got to experience the late 80's to early 2000's in gaming.
Posted on 10/6/22 at 7:41 pm to V Bainbridge
I appreciate that I got to experience those eras as well, but they make me appreciate the games I currently play all the more. My most impactful gaming experiences have all been from games that are less than 20 years old. The art, music, and stories have all just come so far. It‘s easy to get sucked up in the negative, but god damn, my Steam library is bursting with incredible games. So many that I haven’t come close to playing them all. I’m tremendously grateful for that.

Your car analogy is absolutely awful
Most people have one car, and it’s the second biggest purchase they make. It sitting unusable in the shop for two years would be catastrophic, as you would have to pay to replace it, and the whole time it’s depreciating in value.
no....it isn't awful. You're just trying to make an analogy too literal.
But hey....if you're cool with paying $60 for a game that's dogshit for two years.....then by all means.

....yeah.

I would ABSOLUTELY pay $11 for a weekend rental to see if I'd like the game. Hell, that's what I did with Farming Simulator. I wasn't sure if I'd actually enjoy it or not so I paid like $13 for FS19 to check it out. Turns out it's really relaxing and I bought FS22 a few days later.
