JRPGs For Those New To The Genre

I haven’t played a JRPG since I was a kid and I’m looking to get back into them. Research says go with Persona 5 or FF7Remake. Are these the best options? Is FF7Remake a true JRPG, I’ve read it’s more of an action combat style now.

FF7 remake and Persona 5 are both really good P5 is one of my favorite games of all time but it’s easily a 300 hour long monster for someone unfamiliar with the genre. You need to start from the beginning imo. Play FF7 original, then FF10 before working your way into the more modern era with something like DQ 11 then branch out to P5 or something that involves action combat in the JRPG genre.

I’ve beaten the original FF7 like 3 times I think, and although the remake is one of the most impressive games I’ve ever played, I wouldn’t consider it an RPG in the old-school sense. The combat is very action-oriented and takes a little while to get the hang of.
I still recommend it but I think Persona might be more what you’re looking for.

FFX and DQ11 are both very good recommendations.

P5 is turn based yeah but it would make for a pretty shite introduction to JRPGs imo. It’s a top 5 all time game for me but it’s by no means easy combat wise by time you make the second main dungeon unless you’re playing on easy and even medium at first by time you get into the third one. The high school and shear absolute amount of player choice and demands it asks of a player in that regard can be insanely daunting and off putting too if you don’t follow a guide. OP if you do get P5 make sure get the Royal version. It adds a whole separate 40 hours on to the end game and much needed quality of life improvements to combat and confidants.

I’ve played JRPGs before, just been a long time since. I don’t mind dropping hours into a game because that’s how I decompress for the most part. I’ve completed the OG FF7 3 or 4 times as a kid. I guess I’m looking for something too shelf to get myself back into them.

To this day, I will state that Lost Odyssey is one of the greatest JRPGs of all time and if you haven’t played it, you’re missing out.

FF7 Remake is not a traditional JRPG, but the original FF7 was. It is a great game though so I highly recommend it. If you are into story though, I highly recommend going down the rabbit hole for FF7 and playing the original first and following it up with an FF7: Advent Children viewing (and read spoilers on FF7 crisis core and dirge of cerberus) before playing FF7 Remake. Remake might not be a "Remake" in the traditional sense storywise.
Edit: I responded to your initial comment before looking at responses and saw that you had stated that you played FF7 (which was more playthroughs than I had). Disregard my suggestion on playing it first but I would still watch FF7 Advent Children and read spoilers on crisis core and dirge of cerberus before playing remake. Trying so hard to not spoil anything but remake, while taking place during the events of FF7, seems more like a sequel to all of the previous FF7 games/media. You will understand when you play it.

I have heard people sing the praise of that one and somehow I've still yet to try it out.

Will do! I’ll let you know what I think, thanks.

FFX Remaster is a great one to start out with.

Never played it. Always wanted to. Saw it was available in the xbox store and was on sale a few weeks ago, so I bought it. Plan on firing it up once I get a little free time.
Have read quite a few times that this is one of the more underrated console rpgs.

Check out Chained Echoes. It's being praised as one of the best retro-inspired RPGs in years. It's also available on just about every console; Xbox, ps5, switch, and PC.
It's currently free on Game Pass.

It is classic turn based combat.
It is massively underrated.

It's the spiritual successor to Squaresoft Final Fantasy games (prior to the Square-Enix merger). Worth a playthrough for sure. Great gameplay, characters, and story.

P5 is a must play for the soundtrack alone.

I'm currently playing the Crisis Core remake. It's not bad, a little repetitive and some parts seem very similar to the FF7 remake. So those two may be on the table, but I'd agree they aren't JRPGs in the traditional sense.

Dragon Quest 11 S is probably the best *turn* based JRPG I've ever played, and I would probably consider it the best JRPG I've played as well.
I'm currently playing Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition which I'm 63hrs in and would consider this a near perfect game for the action JRPG genre. There's also Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 none of which need to be played in order since they are not chronological or take place in the same universe.

FF7R is not a JRPG.
Play Persona or Dragon Quest 11.
