I just tuned in to the overwatch tournament. It is hard as shite to understand whats going on with the camera changes and the micro machine commentating.

Does it take being a player of said game make it easier to follow? I don't play Overwatch, so maybe i just didnt understand.

How can eSports be more mainstream? My wife wouldn't know what the frick was going on.

How are you supposed to follow if you don't play or invested in it?

Can you follow rugby and cricket? Gotta give it time and become interested.

I have never played football.

I own and play Overwatch occasionally so I do understand the mechanics. Trying to watch was confusing as frick.

ETA: my overarching point is if you are a gamer and its still hard to follow, how can you bring non-gamers into the fold?

Overwatch is a terrible spectator e-sport. CS:GO is a much better entry-level watch if you don't know anything about the game itself.

The only gaming tournament I like watching is Street Fighter.

There's usually so much going on in an Overwatch game that it makes it hard to spectate. Makes it tough to watch for an e-sport.

My fav to watch is CSGO. It's pretty straight forward. Flash here, smoke this, molly there, hold angle here, buy this round, save next, etc.

I have no clue what is going on in OW. Looks like a jumbled mess. I have to know the game to know what is going on.

Watching high level smash play is fun as shite.

Esports and especially fighting games have really weird terms like “tech” or technique they love to combine terms like for example:

In smash there are directional attacks like forward smash and forward aerials. To make commentating quicker they’ll combine stuff like back air = bair/down air = dair and so on and so forth. It can get really confusing an down right stupid sometimes.

Not even as a kid?

ETA: That said, how many years or decades have you spent watching, reading about, and talking about football?

If you did the same with Overwatch, I'm sure you'd get the same result.

A few years ago I really got into watching the Evo championship.

Fighting games at the competitive level is extremely entertaining. I really don't see the entertainment in first-person shooting competitive tournaments.

I think watching esports is fun if you know what's happening. I usually watch Smash Bros and Tekken 7 for the most part. Occasionally League of Legends. Overwatch is pretty confusing to me as well, granted I've never played a second of that game in my life.

Rocket League tournaments can be fun to watch. It'd be easier to follow too because it's a sportier game.

I watched a bit of Dota 2 TI and have fun with that. I think anyone can get into it with good casters and the crowd cheering indicating good/bad plays

I got really into watching fighting game championships and Evo is the grand daddy of them all. The pros at these games are unreal from their reaction times to their spacing and everything. They have a guy that goes by Sonicfox a black American dude that is an animal at Mortal Kombat and dragon ball fighterz. I’ve followed him for 2 years now he’s a beast

I watch the league of legends tournaments when it’s USA vs Korea just to see if the Americans can pull of a miracle but it never happens. I don’t really know what’s going on but the announcers make it hype as frick lol. Also used to watch the halo championships but that got old

I watch them sometimes. Some games are harder to follow than others, but as the poster said, if you don't know the game, then it'll be hard to follow.

I used to play CS and I still like watching the big tourneys. I completely understand and can follow them. It's not a hard game to follow.

But I also play WoW and it's hard to follow PvP tournaments to me. I don't know every mechanic from every class, plus it happens so fast... too much going on at the same time for me. Also, it has been over 10 years since I PvP'd. All PvE now.

Put on a League of Legends tourney and I have absolutely no clue whatsoever what's going on... Just lots of movement and pretty lights and colors.
