How is Overwatch even popular?

Garbage servers and competitive doesn't even work correctly. I just got a loss in a game that we won... Nice game Blizzard. 
I can understand some bugs, but getting a loss in a game that you were on the winning team for? Might want to fix that.

When I first played it I was like that's it? That's all the hype? But the more I played it the more I liked it. It's a moba. If you don't like Moba's then you won't like this. As far as the battle.net server issue...really? You're going to complain about that? I've been playing on battle.net since 2010 and rarely are there issues. I personally haven't had any issues with competitive play either. Also I've found that when blizzard ranks you, just because your team won doesn't mean that you did well. Same as Starcraft.

I don't think this qualifies as a MOBA. I would imagine this qualifies as a first person shooter.
I got turned off when the graphical issues with FPS started occurring, and Blizzard took FOREVER to even acknowledge them and let the community know they were working on a fix.
It'll still be a fun game I dabble in from time to time, but I have zero interest in delving any further than that and I certainly won't put the time into it like I did/do for LoL.
ETA: The game isn't bad, but the amount of issues they had and are still having seem to be quite numerous. Hopefully they get everything straight and this game gains more popularity.

It's fun. They honestly need a few more game modes ala CTF and whatnot but I ejoy the weekly brawls

I don't understand how people play the game for hours on end, but it's definitely a great change of pace for me.
I'll throw it in 3-4 times a week amd play with my friends and we have a good time. The only thing that irks me is people is competitve mode playing as characters that they don't know how to use.
I keep getting placed with people who pick Ana, then don't do any support and just snipe like an idiot.

people really get into the cartoon characters, with females wearing tight outfits games.
I thought game was mediocre, but people are really into the game.
But i do think the ban hammer blizzard wields is awesome, it might make me actually purchase full game. I'll support a company that hammers cheaters and hackers.

This sums it up for me, I enjoy playing 2-3 matches every now and then, but it's nothing that I'm overly excited about. I played it a good bit at release but it kind of fizzled out for me.

It's a very water downed MOBA with great graphics and shooter feel to it so that it can have mass appeal. It's not a great game, but it's a great crossover for casual gamers to try a MOBA, and that's why it's so successful
Edit: not saying it's a bad game, bringing a very hardcore gamer style of game (MOBA) to a casual audience and having it be successful is a huge feat

There is a trend in FPS titles of moving away from the ultra realistic military shooters to a more arena based theme. As others have mentioned, it has crossover elements from MOBAs (ultimate abilities, unique character designs, etc). And perhaps most importantly, it has that Blizzard polish and support through patches and updates. I was a naysayer for sure until I tried it. I will admit though that it's best played in bursts. I can't sit there for hours playing it.

I wasn't impressed with it in beta...but the more I have played it the more I enjoy it.
It's a game and games are suppose to be fun...and it is that.
Also if I don't have a lot of time I can knock out a quick game in 10 minutes...

I would say its a shooter with a MOBA feel. The problem is the skill gap and complete lack of awareness for the majority of the player base. Blizzard does a great job of marketing and they sell the shite out of the game to ALL ages. Most of us on in the GB are over the age of 18 and not completely retarded, unlike all of the 10 years that play... anyway that's a rant for another day.
I think the game in competitive mode with people you play with is very fun and addicting, but it can be very disappointing otherwise.
The only time I've seen people derank is during placement matches, it has to do with MMR and how bad you should have wooped the other team, who really knows though.
