56 here and not a "boomer". Wanting to own physical media doesn't make anyone a "boomer".
The physical copy gives you ownership whether the game "plays" off of it continuously or not.
You can sell it to soemone else and they can play it. You can loan it to someone else and they can play it. You can't do either of those things with a digital game code once it has been purchased and assigned to your account.
I'll speak for myself, this is Take Two doing this for profit (the disc costs money to make) and to sell more digital copies over teh life of the game (can't sell or trade), which sucks.
It also cuts the throat of physical stores who resell used and new games.
I'm going to wait for the disc version that is supposedly coming in December 2026.
ETA: If Take Two/Rockstar want to charge extra for something, make the disc version $5 more, that pricing structure would actually make sense.

Because they made that decision today after the completely reasonable backlash. Yesterday, most people were saying the physical release would be next year.
ETA: Actually, it looks like this is just a rumor based off "sources." May not actually be a physical edition coming in December and this has not yet been confirmed by Rockstar.

The only way they could possibly make that seem like a worthwhile purchase is if they made gta online 2.0 encompass vice city, liberty city, and San Andreas and have those all be fully fleshed out areas. Travel from zone to zone via airports.
“Build up a crime syndicate across the country”. Something along those lines.
But given what I’ve seen, take two and rockstar are greedy double dipping fricks that will continue to abuse gamers who just want the next shiny trinket. Still, I would be surprised to see them shift from their current model of releasing a game and pairing the online mode to the game post release. They load up the “free” online mode with micro transactions and make bank. Why deviate?

Oh man. I've seen a lot of people who are only interested in GTA Online. If this is true, it's pretty shady that they waited till after pre-orders opened to mention it.

Wait so when you said that it was new for rockstar to lock missions behind a paywall that was true? That wasn’t false? Or when you said that I’m a unicorn for not caring about having physical copies even though that vast majority of games purchased are digital.
