Horizon had the worst sidequests and NPC voice acting ever, but god the main story was original and aweesome. i really wasnt feeling the game at ALL until I started doing main story missions and then it just clicked.
So much this. I put Horizon down twice after getting 2-3 hours in and being bored. Picked it up the 3rd time because my wife was curious about the game with the female lead, and it hooked me the 3rd time.

Horizon is one of those games that I somehow missed. So if I pick it up, just ignore the side stuff and play the main quest?

do the side stuff so you can get all the upgrades and shite, just dont get lost in it like I did. make sure you're mixing it up with the main quest

Just beat the game. Hell yeah that ending was great.

In act 3 now. End of act 2 was great

The side stuff fills in some of the story of the world and the main story which is fantastic. However the facial animations are pathetic and the first part of the game was a chore but after that it was awesome. The voice of aloy annoyed me a lot at first as well. The last third of the game is one of my favorite gaming experiences this gen

Horizon was one of the rare games (and definitely one of the only open world games) where I really wanted to see what was going to happen with the main storyline. Ghost of Tsushima is steadily growing on me, but not because of the story - at this point (the start of act 2) I’m not especially intrigued.
Horizons side stuff was pretty crappy. However, I don’t know that it was that big of an anomaly (although it probably was worse than most of its competitors). I get bored with the side quests in most open world games. To me, the best stuff in Act 1 of this game were clearly some of the main missions. I enjoyed some of the Far Cry base takeover stuff, and that one mythic quest where you get the slash move, but most of the regular side quests were fairly meh to me.
Definitely a good game though. Combat is surprisingly fun.

Lethal mode is the way to play. Way better and smoother
I agree, it adds a good deal more challenge and feels more natural. I got one shot by a Mongol leaders shield slam earlier from like 85% health

It is finished
I gotta say, Act 2 was the high point of the game for me. The beautiful diverse landscapes, the quests, particularly the side quests were outstanding. Act 3 I just wasn’t digging the desolate winter wasteland and the quests didn’t impress.
Overall great game though, now the waiting for Cyberpunk begins...

Felt the same. The ending was great, but I wish the build to it had been a little more fleshed out to add some oomph to it.
Plat’d it today. Wanna try the lethal mode but the thought of chasing down all the abilities, armor and whatnot gives me pause. Might let this game soak a while and maybe they’ll patch in a NG+.
I’d still give it a 9/10. Great map, beautiful art, fun combat. Samurai MGS.

I'm starting tonight, does anyone that's played through it have any tips for someone starting that you would have wished to know first? etc.

Do the quest that grants you the bow ASAP. You can see your potential rewards on the quest selection menu. Get the bow and the long bow. It really helps for clearing out Mongol camps. I was struggling with archers wrecking me until I got the bow and could pick them off at distance undetected.
As far as upgrades, I focused primarily on maxing out my Standoff ability and stealth kill chain ability. That makes random encounters way easier. For gear and charms, it’s completely up to you. Sometimes I chose stealthy stuff; sometimes I put on my big dick samurai stuff.
For progression, I knocked out side quests first and hit up ?’s and special blue quests (forget the exact name, but the icon is blue on the map) as they popped up along the way. Then, I did the main story missions. I have no idea if this was most efficient, but I didn’t miss anything.
Only real protip I have is when you come across wild boars, those kunai knives are awesome. When fully upgraded throwing them kills all 3 boars instantly. For bears, a headshot with bow is insta-kill. Makes collecting predator hides easy.

Start on at least hard difficulty, game is way too easy on normal. If you wanna kick it up to Lethal difficulty I recommend putting points into your ghost weapons (specifically kunai and smoke bomb upgrades) fairly early along with the chain assassination ability. Then probably the standoff upgrades. In Lethal you want to minimize the amount of time you're in a stand up fight because a couple of hits and you're dead.
If you stay with hard mode then you should just upgrade the stuff that looks interesting to you.
Just some general tips, during a stand off watch your opponents feet, they'll try to juke you out but they don't actually attack until their feet move. To unlock sword stances you have to either kill or observe Mongol leaders training. You can actually do both, observe them train, then kill them for a 2nd point. Helps to unlock all the stances quickly.
