Former Madden Game Developer Speaks Out

Rex created the Madden 16 catch system. After implementing it and determining it was trash he wanted to scrap it.
However an EA producer loved that his kid could finally play Madden because of the catch system and started shifting gameplay away from skill players to make it easier + flukier to reel in casual players. This also had to do with wanting to pull in more casual gamers.
Rex also wanted EA to take a year off from introducing new modes and game additions and work on all the kinks in the gameplay.
EA hates the idea of fixing gameplay and not introducing new modes because they believe that if they cant put something on a box to sell you the game wont move via sales
In addition once a feature has been listed EA doesnt feel the need to auto implement it because they already sold you on it once and cant capitalize on the same feature again.
EA has an allotment of money they are willing to put toward every Madden game and modes like longshot and frostbite(any new engine would) suck up a lot of it.
He said developers know there are money formations and routes that should have proper defensive counters but EA doesnt want to invest into the engine the way they would need to in order to fix it.
EA believes "their" Madden customers are bought in. So their focus is on reeling in the casual player and not retaining the core gamer.
He goes into more details. Long story short he is a lot like us and EA wouldnt let him make the game the way most of us wanted it and left.
Says what many people think but he outlines how committed EA is to their model in terms of making money and further reinforces the need to boycott the franchise if you hope to have your voice heard and have the franchise possibly make a return to football.

I just want NCAA back.

Playing recent Madden games actually makes me glad that NCAA died before it could be turned into the same bullshite.

I bought Madden 19 while it was on sale after Christmas. This was the first time I had played it since Madden 11 I think. I was into for about a month and just gave up. The gameplay is awful. Ultimate team while in theory is cool is beyond awful. Also I missed the cheesy Madden rock music.

I disagree with some of Rex’s points as outlined but he is right in the fact all EA cares about is MUT and it’s killed the game imo.
Also Rex was the head of some shitty Maddens too.

Why would a true gamer play casual games like madden? If I wanted to play in the nfl I could have I just didn’t apply myself
I can’t kill someone with a katana however

Well that’s just bad logic

Why doesn't EA just do two games - one realistic, one arcade style?

Maybe they could buy the Blitz franchise for that purpose, either going with old school NFL Blitz or full on Blitz The League.

Didn't buy 18 or 19, and will never buy another.

bullshite, maybe for a season or 2. they know the cash cow potential of an NFL game
NBA live has never been as popular as Madden and they brought it back after a complete rebuild
eta: also, in its current form it might as well be canceled, the game is unplayable garbage

Madden sales have been falling steadily over the past few years.
Release week:
Madden NFL 15 - 1,619,736
Madden NFL 16 - 1,565,348
Madden NFL 17 - 1,054,664
Madden NFL 18 - 937,450
Madden NFL 19 - 788,006
That hurts the bottom line and impacts MUT.

This shite is what pisses me off more than anything in PvP sports games.
EA are not the only developer who are guilty of it either. SDS have it in MLB the Show.....a game which also has, at times, ridiculous rubberbanding.

First one I didn’t buy since the Xbox 360 days.

Gridiron Champions just got their series A funding, will probably still be another year or so before the game comes out, but this will be the next college football game.
I am part of the insiders program, while I don't have a ton of info, I do have some. Their model is built to be like 2k basketball in that they will have generic teams and players, but allow the community to create and share ( Example)
Their have been talks of licensing with university's so the community doesn't have to build the jerseys, fields, stadiums, etc. but that deal hasn't been made.
The biggest difference if this happens will be that the teams will still have completely randomly generated rosters.

I've bought this every year even though it's been bad for a long time. Last year I bought it and played it for maybe a week then never touched it again.
This is the first year I won't buy it. I have disposable income so it's not a money issue. I'll never miss that $60 and that's been my reason for continuing to buy it knowing I wouldn't play it much.
This year I'm not buying it on principle. To be fair, it feels like most sports games are not as fun as they used to be. I could play Madden or an NBA game forever and not get bored with it. I don't know if it's that the sports games have gotten worse or that other genres have gotten so much better.
I will say if Madden ever put together a really in depth Franchise mode that was good I'd pay a lot more than $60 for it. If I could really build a team where ratings and chemistry mattered would be key.
