So. . .my son bought the game, played it for 3 hours and deleted it. Said the combat was grossly tedious, but super easy, after the first couple fights
He bought it because he likes action rpg's and this was being billed by everyone as such
I logged into his Steam acct and tried it. Played for about 6 hours.
My thoughts:
This is a near generic, aggressively lukewarm action game, cosplaying as a Dragon Age RPG (another reviewers words, but using them because it nails it). If it didn't have DA in the title, this would be a 6-7/10 game. As a DA entry, it is a 5/10 at best.
-Tone is eerily similar to a Pixar movie, dialogue easily is the worst in AAA gaming history.
-The only characters that have any weight or substance are carry-over characters
-Companions are aggressively bland, inoffensive, and excruciatingly affable
-Graphically and technically awesome. Combat is good, for the first hour or so.
-Story is mediocre in parts, good in parts.
-As Cohhcarnage said that many of the controversial scenes are delivered like D.A.R.E. commercials for middle schoolers, patronizing and condescending. Must have been hard for them to code that while looking down their noses
-Companions DO NOTHING in combat, except execute the skills you tell them to execute. What I mean is they don't draw aggro, or engage anything. they stand around waiting to do what you tell them to do while you fight.
-Solas is the only decently written character, and he is only in the game for 7 or so minutes at the start.
as I said already 5/10. Aggressively mediocre as a whole. . .but beautiful and a finished game (encountered 0 bugs, AT ALL). Zero risks were taken in any way, except the cringey gender shite, which is not much of the game at all

Just seeing how shite this game looks makes me wanna rebuy DA:O but I know it probably won't hold up to my memory.
I can't recommend metaphor enough but if he was looking for an action rpg that doesn't fit the bill.
Just read and there is a dragon age origins remake in the works but it is gonna be a few years. Surprised modders haven't done a total graphics overhaul for it

dragon age origins remake
Leliana will be gay
Sten will be trans
Alistair will be gay
Bioware won't be able to help themselves
And I would probably buy it anyway

Still one of the best written games I've ever played. Renewed my appreciation for protags not being voiced. You can give the dialogue choices so much more depth that way.

It is the pattern they are setting up
You have 2 romance options as a straight male in Veilguard
No way they do without a gay female

Can this thread get back to veilguard being a woke piece of trash?
Game seems to have massively underperformed. It fell off hard from Steam and fell off on Twitch really fast too. Seems like the diehards fans of the IP were excited and scooped it up at release but it didn't reach an anybody besides that.
Not really sure if there's a future for Bioware. It's been nothing but failure for a decade spanning multiple projects.

Steam DB shows 89k right now. That doesn't sound fantastic to me, but somehow this is EA's most successful launch (On Steam?) ever.
After playing the game for about 10 hours or so, I'd say the game is "fine." I just don't think "fine" is what you want with a 10 year dev cycle. There's nothing in this game whatsoever that looks or feels like it has been in development for more than 2-3 years max. This game looks and feels like it has a far lower budget than any DA game before it outside of maybe DA2.
The game is going to have to make a huge amount of money to justify it's existence at this point, and "fine" is not going to cut it.
It feels like the game tries to combine the gameplay style of Mass Effect 2 and 3 with the map design and combat of God of War (2018) only not done as well in either aspect.
I can accept a relative lack of RPG mechanics in comparison to its predecessors, but unlike ME2//3, you have very little agency in the plot or how you roleplay your character. Your character is pretty much "some guy" and remains "some guy" throughout the entire game (thus far). This happen around him, and he just reacts to things happening. He has no personality or any real stake in the events taking place. Dialogue options mostly boil down to being nice, being "slightly sarcastic," and being "slightly" gruff, but your responses do nothing to define your character's personality unlike Hawke in DA2.
The story as well, thus far, feels very on rails. It's entertaining, but there aren't a lot of choices to be seen and those choices that are there feel like they don't have any impact on the story.
I do like the side content. I find the hand-crafted side quests more entertaining than Inquisition's close x number of fade rifts or collect x of y item. Likewise though, I haven't encountered any side quests as of yet that offer up any meaningful choices or side quests that affect the main plot in any way.
I do like the focus on companions. Instead of like in ME2 where you talk to your companions a bunch and then complete a loyalty mission, in this game, you have entire quest-lines developed to your companion characters. It is a shame though that unlike in older BioWare games, you can only talk to your companions at very specific moments in the story.

Thank you and the others that are giving reviews after playing the game for a few hours. I hope you will come back later and offer updates. I have yet to start this game, but eventually will. I am a huge fan of this series. However, one thing you folks have reminded me of is how I wasn’t enamored with any of the three earlier games at first. It took several hours for me to become hooked. I am now preparing myself for that sort of adjustment again. I would be curious to see if something like that happens for any of you that keep going with the game.

I haven’t played the game, but from what I just read after a quick google search is that there are seven romanceable companions. All are pan. Three are male, three are female, and one is non binary.
Is that not three options, which is more than you had in Origins?
Posted on 11/4/24 at 2:50 am to Joshjrn
Without spoiling, a straight male can romance 2
If you decide to be bi, you can romance 5
If you are a bi female, you can romance all of them
If you decide to be bi, you can romance 5
If you are a bi female, you can romance all of them

I appreciate that this may not be answerable without spoilers, but I don’t understand this. And I’m not seeing that anywhere other than on here. I suppose one of the three cis looking females are actually male? Or does one of the female romances require MMF poly?
Blink twice if so

I'm pretty sure any character can romance all companions.

Bland characters to be not offensive is what Outer Worlds suffered from. Couldn't finish it.
