Only time I can remember was during some holiday season where it was down for a few days. They gave out Undertow to apologize. LINK

You can google for more instances.

I can't remember Live going out very often, maybe once but it was short. I do remember my internet being a problem one time, I couldn't connect for about 4 or 5 days because of some setting on my new router....MS sent me a 30 day live card.

Yes, for advertising purposes. I don't think I've made any statement thus far stating otherwise.

this.

but OML was certainly on the verge of out and out saying it, with his "Big Brother", "9/11 wire tapping" comments.

No kidding. This makes the $100 more of something you will have 7-10 years seem like legitimate gripe.
It seems like the old talking points are getting stale and we've moved on to vast MS/gov conspiracy.

Here's a suggestion for the PS fanboys. Point out what the PS4 does BETTER than the Xbone. There are examples.

I think it's absurd to think that Microsoft is in collusion with the government to monitor the lives of Americans with the inclusion of the Kinect.

I also think it's absurd to think that Microsoft wouldn't use data collected via the Kinect for advertising purposes (in a way that hasn't exactly been done before).

There is an option to disable it so this becomes a non issue.

This happens everywhere. I was on my computer earlier updating my Directv account and now it is showing up on the column underneath the message board menu on TD. The other day I bought some stuff from Jos A Bank and they were plastered everywhere...on this site. MS doing what everyone else does. Hell, I'd rather see advertising that I can relate to or might generally be interested in...instead of douche and tampons

These people do realize that advertising has used these practices since...well, since advertising was invented?

They are always looking for another edge to get more content to more people and find new ways to target new audiences.

If the advertising angle is really that big of a deal, quit being a consumer. Until then, consider yourself targeted.

I'm on neither side of this whole console battle (or pc) but damn some of the stuff that people are fretting over is plain silly

And over time that will help us be more targeted about what content choices we present, what advertising we present, how we get better feedback. And data about how many people are in a room when an advertisement is shown, how many people are in a room when a game is being played, how are those people engaged with the game? How are they engaged with a sporting event? Are they standing up? Are they excited? Are they wearing Seahawks jerseys?

Oh, so it's about advertising then? What a bunch of shite.

There are also Chrome extensions that disallow the user from being tracked, yet Chrome is still one of Google's most powerful utensils for collecting and collating data for advertisers, simply because most people don't employ such measures.

You would have to fall off the grid these days to not be targeted by ad servers.

It's their choice if they do or not.

I use Chrome and have blocked all tracking abilities on my computers, use adblock, use peer block, etc. but that's only because I don't trust individuals on the internet and don't care to wait on ads to load when I am browsing. Not because I worry about google serving me targeted ads.

It's about catering to the individual. If your kid walks in the room to play Xbox and he likes shooters...it starts up those games. Makes it quick to get into what you want to do. If you like racing games...it goes that direction. You can also disable it, I know been talked about 20 times already, but that may be an important part to consider.

Of course. It even happens on this site, right now.

The manner in which it is being done with the Kinect, however, is a bit more invasive than previous methods.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. I was simply providing an answer for OML's question. But to think the device won't be used for such purposes is a bit naive.

When did anyone say that? It is creepily similar to it though.

And apparently you are wrong. Microsoft is indeed curious what you're up to so they can know exactly what advertisements to run. And the fact was this was not optional when the console was announced. Did they really thing the generation that went nuts over SOPA would be cool with a company spying on them simply for advertising purposes? It seems to be a pretty fricked up practice if you ask me.

You and Bunta always do this crap. You two are notorious about highlighting only certain things in an article to get people riled up knowing not many will read the full articles then when others call out the BS you both backtrack and say "no I was just doing this and it's no big deal now"
