Downloaded last night so I’ll be fighting and fricking my way through Mordor with the rest of you nerds soon.
Was gonna wait for next gen but doesn’t look like that’s gonna be possible anytime soon.

The amount of time wasted in this game fricking around to find alternative ways around barred doors to wealth is absolutely maddening

The game world reminds me of AC3. I can appreciate roaming around in Anglo-Saxon England as it's really not a time period that has been previously explored in this level of detail in any medium. That said, it just isn't that interesting to run around in. It's a whole lot of (beautiful) relatively flat empty space. The largest city I've encountered thus far is Lundon which still feels more akin to a village from other games even when compared to Origins/Odyssey.

Because at that period of time after the Roman collapse, most European cities had depopulated and devolved to little more than villages compared to the cities during the might of the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman empires.
As an example, London at its Roman height had 60k population. After the collapse the city was all but abandoned. It wasn’t until the Anglo-Saxons moved in some time later that the population was able to climb back to 10k.

I mean historical accuracy isn’t high up on my list for video game criteria.

You are 100% correct, but that doesn't make it a good choice of setting for an Assassin's Creed game.

Finally got that fricker in the cave. Finally decided to try the 2 handed axe on him even though I haven’t upgraded it at all and it made it waaaay easier, each heavy hit from it staggers him so you can get 3 heavy hits in before he recovers. Just have to keep a close eye on your stamina bar and parry his daggers instead of dodge them

I could do with a lot less running around and trying to find oil jars to blow shite up with

Oh thank God, I was hoping that was a perk somewhere.

God damn I hate how zoomed out combat is. Takes away all the weight of your attacks when the camera is that far away.
Hoping they patch in some kind of option for zoom levels down the line.

Still playing the hell out of this, 40 hours and up to Cent which I think is only power 130...feels like I still have a long way to go
The patch this week seems like it was good - I like how they revealed all of skills now, only the paths stay obscured.
Converted to playing on the Series X and while it obviously looks better, the better load times are worth it

This. It makes the combat less interesting. Just a hard to see anything mosh pit. I’m maybe ten hours in now and it’s still annoying.
But the game does get a lot better with the move to England. I still hate how difficult they make finding materials during raids and normal scavenging though.

It’s actually easy. First you have sync areas, then if zoom all the way in on the map you’ll see a bunch of tiny yellow dots pop up. This is all the small chests containing crafting materials (iron, leather, fabric, supplies, etc.). The dots look just like the big wealth dots but you can only see them if you zoom all the way in.
For instance, most raids have 2-3 wealth dots that are visible on the map no matter what the zoom level. If you zoom all the way in you’ll see 4-6 extra small yellow dots that are small chests.
Basically if you zoom all the way in you can see literally every chest in the game.

Yep. Almost Diablo level iso views during big battles. Boss fights and castle sieges look amazing so I wish they would just let us keep that angle.

That’s not what I’m talking about though. I’m talking about the aggravating “mini-puzzles” to get materials and loot where you have to search all over for how the frick to get in. I’ve resorted to just googling everything when I get around it because it’s a time waster.

They're not exactly mensa-level puzzles there buddy.

No shite bro. But having everything require some special path or moving of objects or exploding of barriers is anal retentive levels of resource grinding. I’ve avoided those games for a reason. It’s just time wasting. It’s not the difficulty of puzzles. It’s time.

I agree with this. For this reason, I have largely avoided the armor chests in the game. You never quite know what you're going to get either, so the weapon/armor may not even be something you'd want to use with your spec.
I've largely just upgraded the armor/weapons that I've had since the start of the game.
I feel like this was an intentional design decision to throw less new gear at the player and to make viable upgrading existing armor for those who want to ignore the gear grind entirely, but the way in which you actually obtain the new gear makes me not want to even bother with it.
Also, I'm not saying Valhalla will have me jumping off the AC train, but after going back through some of the older games in the series, it's evident that they've really lost their way with this new style of game.
The old games were much tighter in their design. You had much greater variety in the structure of the main missions as opposed to your activities in the open world.
Every mission in Valhalla is 90% the same thing you did the last time. Go to a fort to kill a dude, collect a thing, or talk to a dude.
The main story feels like it's made up of 90% filler. It's as if they took all of Odyssey's side quests and stuck them under the main quest umbrella. Every arc is the same tired concept of going to a new area, helping the locals with a problem, and then ending the arc with an assault on a castle. The assaults are "always" the exact same thing. Use the battering ram to break down the door, use the flaming vase things to blow up the barricades, shoot the things to lower the drawbridge, engage in Dark Souls-esque boss battle with your target.
