I know this is a common topic on the gaming board.

Ever since I’ve been able to run roms off a sd card on my GameCube, I’ve been playing less and less of my PS5. The game industry is broken right now, it’s just not enjoyable to me. They expect us to pay more for games that are released unfinished with a “roadmap” of things to add. They require you to always be online for “achievements” and stupid loot boxes.

With my GameCube setup I’ve been downloading games I’ve never heard of and been enjoying it. I really think the 2000s-2010s were the pinnacle of gaming. It’s not complete nostalgia, lot of the games I’m playing I’ve never played or some never even heard of as a kid and they feel a lot more solid than some of the crap we get today.

Hard for me to agree with you when I just got done playing one of the best games ever in Expedition 33 and with the new Ghost of Yotei coming soon.

I'm finishing up a playthrough of the OG FF7 right now so I respect the classics 100%, but no, there are amazing games coming out. You just have to find them.

I actually bought a BC PS3 a month ago. Stocked up on some games I missed out on back then in addition to some that I actually enjoyed. Mostly single player stuff, but it should be a nice little time.

Whistle basically covered it. Are there some annoying trends in gaming? Sure. Is it really easy to avoid them while having more good to great games than you have time to play? Yep.

The old staples like COD are dead. They’ve become nothing but low effort cash grabs

There are still masterpieces like Red Dead, Cyberpunk, Ghost of Tsushima and many more

This might only be my opinion but my problem with today's gaming is the games are just getting too massive. This could also be part of the problem why games are being released unfinished, full of bugs.

Im an 80s baby and used to love popping in a NES or SNES game and beat it in a few hours, replay it or move on to another game. All games now are going to these massive open world games and I just can't put that amount of time into it. I've tried and failed multiple times to get through each of GTAV, RDR2, Skyrim, Breath of the wild, and The Witcher.

You just likely aren’t into big open world RPGs. No biggie. Plenty of other options. Hell, we are currently living through a massive 2-D platformer resurgence. Have you found any to tickle your fancy?

Red Dead 2 was probably one of the best games I’ve ever played. Cyberpunk while better now, was horribly unfinished when it came out. That’s my problem is that there are games in an unfinished state that get released expecting you to pay the full price for a game you won’t be able to play fully in a year.

the simple solution to this is to wait and buy the game at a discount after it has been polished. I do this pretty regularly now and am more than happy with "modern gaming"

I took a break from daily gaming for about 18 months years ago and have pretty much stayed 18 months behind as a far as getting into new releases. By that time the games are either on Game Pass or 50-70% off and are as patched as they are gonna get. The only time I buy a new game is if its multiplayer focused and there a very few of those that interest me.

Cyberpunk cant fill the rdr2 void.

KCD2 is the closest when it comes to worldbuilding. Its basically medieval red dead 2

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

It's not like there aren't any good games releasing, but I am increasingly disinterested in most of what modern gaming has to offer.

I think my issue, and I'm genuinely not being snarky with this, is so what?

I can't speak for anyone else, but there are more games released every year that I want to play than I'm capable of playing, such that my already incredible backlog of great games to play gets ever longer. As long as that continues, wouldn't it be unreasonable of me to say I'm "sick of modern gaming" when "modern gaming" is still putting out more games that I want to play than I'm capable of playing? So what if it's also putting out dozens or hundreds of games that I have no interest in playing? That doesn't inconvenience me in any way, and I don't see why I would be put off or upset about it.

Nostalgia has a way of clouding our thinking.

There are undeniable negative trends in AAA gaming, but I still manage to find plenty of titles that capture my interest.

With gaming, nothing will ever feel as good as it did when I was a kid or a teenager firing up the consoles of those eras. Life was simpler then. But I'm not so jaded or so pessimistic that I cannot enjoy what there is to be enjoyed in life or in this silly hobby.

I had a rough patch in my 30's where I found fault with many things. But so much of it I cannot control, so why let it be a burden on me? I still have my beliefs, my values, and the things that I enjoy. But I won't waste time dwelling on things that don't live up to my expectation or I find disappointing. Life is simply too short for that.

The short answer is no. I am still happy in modern gaming.

longer thoughts:

while i wouldnt say we are in a golden age of gaming, we are in a fantastic age of gaming. There are certainly things i dislike of course. Companies catering to the flavor of the month social agenda. Micro transaction junk. Gutting of beloved classics for profits. HUGE lag times in development phase now.

The positives far outshine the negatives.
Gaming is way more affordable than what we we had as kids (or at least when i was). I was 10 years old when super mario bros 3 on nes came out. it priced at 49.99. in todays value, that would be 125 bucks. insane. Games now are just breaking into the 80 dollar range, and people are throwing fits. Then there is a whole world of games at your finger tips in the indy space for way less than big budget tripple A games.

Speaking of that indy space: you can have a great time all the tie in that space without worrying about triple A, or double A games. I feel one thing older games complain about a lot now is a nostalgia desire for thos old games they played. i can guarantee you can find anything that tickles your fancy in the indy space. Sometimes for 20, 10, or 5 dollars. Look at Hollow Knight Silksong, an old school metroidvania for 20 dollars that is going to be a serious contender for GOTY this year.

Turning our direction back to the big budget side again. Since when have we had such fantastic production value. Some of these games look, feel, sound, and have acting talent better than some (alot) of movies. Point my finger directly at CO:33 here. 10 year old me would have killed for something like that, or a ghost of Tsushima, or RDR2....etc etc etc.

so this is getting long but, are there problems? For sure. But gaming is still in a very healthy place.

No. And I had a Vic 20, C64 and Atari when they came out. Some games are better today than ever before. Some are trash. Just like every other era of gaming.
