My son started getting into it. I try to play with him and I’m absolute trash at the game. Zero control of the car in the air, whiff the ball as much as I hit, the wall is confusing place to be... I’m an embarrassing disaster when I thought I had decent gaming skills.

Anyway we started follow the RLCS tournaments and these dudes are sick. My son is a big NRG fan, so I follow them more than other, but I’m getting to know a lot of the teams/players. I think NRG has the best all around 3 players, but they throw games too often. Rogue seems to have their number lately. First killer is so good right now I would lose money betting he has a hack. BDS looks unstoppable in EU. Worlds should be fun if they have a land this year.

Real rough learning curve. I usually just do 1v1 with my son or play him with bots.

Best advice I can give if you are just starting out: slow down until you stop missing "easy" hits on the ball. Early on everyone wants to go full throttle. It wont take long to get comfortable and more accurate.

For aerials, if you arent the last one back, just go for it and keep adjusting until it clicks. Trial by fire

You can do the custom trainings as well to help. Attacking from the wall was always weird for me, even when I got much better at them.

Most importantly is to have fun with it and What a save! the shite out of your son every time he misses the ball.

Great tips. I am decent, getting better with aireals. Learning to play faster.

Have a cousin that well beyond my level, so playing with him gets me in games with much better people. Its has helped a great deal when I drop back to my division.

Sometimes I can hold my own other times Im just trying not to screw the pooch. I also dont use ball cam much, so I probably handicap myself. It has made for some really fun near blind reverse saves.

I have been playing for like 5 years and I am still only about a Gold 3 or Plat 1 player. The game is hard and I don't care what anyone says.

About to complete year 1 of playing this damn game. I've made it to diamond in doubles and threes. Such a difficult game if you don't practice.

I’m almost in my 40’s, so I might have an excuse. I’ve always excelled at games. I watch some of these young dudes playing, and it’s insane what they can do in game.

I’ve been playing for about 2-3 years and I’ve gotten and maintained Diamond 2ish in both 2’s and 3’s.

I just cannot get past that level.

I suggest looking into bakkesmod, as that will help some during practice runs.

Rocket League is my all time favorite game in the sense that it is one I don't think I'll ever stop playing. Couple years ago I was really good, got about nut hair away from GC. Don't play as much but it's always there when I'm bored.

Started playing a month ago, friend is in diamond, so I’ve had someone to help me asking the way...I got to gold 1 a couple of nights ago in 1v1, lost 4 in a row, back to silver.

It’s a blast, and as lifelong FPS player, very damn hard to adjust to the gameplay.

As a dad gamer, I just don’t have time (or the will) to “practice”, so I just dive in to games and have fun.

I also enjoy drinking while gaming, which means I will inevitably fall off a cliff and eventually have to put down the controller before I break something.

I was diamond back in 2017 or so. Haven't played in a while just because my buddy who I played ranked duos with doesn't play anymore. One of the more fun games of the decade in my opinion.

Some really cool feedback on the gameplay. It really is a fun but frustrating game with a steep learning curve, but it seems like once you have the basic mechanics, you can build on that knowledge.

Anyone into following the esports tournaments? Going down that rabbit hole more and more with watching old games with new matches. It seems like EU dominated the game early. NA has caught up in recent years. The style of play favored how EU played, I think, with solid rotations, crazy aerials, and late commits in goal. Demos happened, but weren’t a major part f game play.

IMO NRG had the best squad in the world to compete in the EU style of play. IMO Rogue is changing the way people are playing RL competitively especially in NA. They are really good 1 v 1 players. They play fast and make early commits to challenges, especial when in goal against aerials. They are also really good a head hunting demos. So against a mechanical and technical team like NRG, they really screw up their rotation and negate one of the best mechanical players in the world in JSTN.

Started playing a couple months ago. Love the game but I’m shite at it, hardstuck in Gold. I play on PC keyboard and mouse so I can’t fly for shite. Keyboard and mouse is 100% a disadvantage on this game

You will still suck unless you put time and effort in. I have 420 hours on PC (with a controller) and I still basically can't do actual aerials.

True that, I won’t put in enough hours to not suck

What do you consider being good?

Cause a teammate that can aerial and has above average car control but no idea how to rotate and just chases the ball around is much worse than someone who plays the ground but rotates well.

I guess the guys that can do all the full control aerial moves. I know how to rotate and generally how to play the game. Can't do the flashy stuff though. I can score goals from the air I just can't do the flipping and control of the car in the air and all that crazy shite.

Yea I mean I remember when the game first came out and everyone sucked. If you could aerial you were a god. When the game started getting popular and people started watching clips it made queuing up without a party in 3s almost impossible. You just get teammates who spend too much time watching videos on how to dribble off the wall and going for clips free style clips. They don't understand that rotating is what gets you in position for those plays. They just spam boost and go for ball. It's the main reason Comp ranks have been so fricked up.

Real rough learning curve

Probably one of the roughest in any game

For me it’s probably the only game I’ve never gotten tired of though, partially because of the learning curve and theoretically infinite skill ceiling

I have played for about 6 years now and I’m Grand Champion, but to be honest there are times that my fingers just don’t do what I want them to and I’m reminded how difficult the game really is. I spent probably close to a year in both diamond and platinum.

For beginners, what I would say is that ground mechanics are the absolute paramount of the game. In fact, it’s possible and has been done to reach as high as champ without aerialing higher than the crossbar.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t learn aerials. You should practice those too. But the ability to accurately and with good power hit the ball on the ground is so underrated.

The second most important is rotations. If you hit the ball and you don’t have an immediate follow back immediately turn out towards the opposite direction (left/right) that the ball goes, you should then drive back, and if you can manage it rotate in a way that allows you to pick up the large boost pads. If not though, it is never worth it to go out of your way to get boost during rotation unless you are absolutely sure the ball won’t be in your net.

The end of your rotation should end up at the back post (opposite post of the ball) and behind your 1 or 2 teammates, who will then challenge for the ball and rotate behind you, and that creates the full rotation cycle

While that is the basic, this game is also about feel. If the ball is stuck in the opponents corner or really just floating in their half, you shouldn’t rotate all the way to your own goal because that would take yourself completely out of the attack if your teammate misses and you need to follow up with a shot as they rotate out.

The last thing I will discuss is settings. The default settings in rocket league aren’t just bad. They are straight up awful

Your camera settings are personal preference, but here is a general guideline

Camera shake : OFF (always)
Fov: 110
Distance: 260-280
Height: 90-110
Angle: -3- -5
Stiffness: .3-.6

The rest are personal preference

I would also recommend changing your controller dead zone to as low as it can go where you can still drive in a straight line and not turn left or right (stick drift) without moving your stick to correct

Hope any of this can help y’all get better
