The fact that not one of you have Lost Odyssey on any of your lists makes me very angry.
Lost Odyssey is one of the greatest JRPGs of all time and if you haven’t played it, you have missed out on an amazing story and classic gameplay.

I like Final Fantasy 8 just fine but imo it’s just a meh ok game compared to many other great Jrpgs. I think the draw system was a gamble that really misfired on them too. It’s ehy if you wanna play it now I always recommend on Steam where you can just auto start with 100 or 10 or so low level spells

FF8 is number 1 all time for me, but mainly out of nostalgia. It was the first JRPG and final fantasy I ever played. I faked sick from school a couple days back in about 4th or 5th grade and got all the way to the 3rd disc in 2 days I was so obsessed
I do recognize the faults in the game thought which is why I chose not to play the remaster, I didn’t want to ruin the memories I have of it as a kid. That relaxing tune they play as you’re running around the quad at balamb is my shite, I could listen to it for hours

Agreed, I’d definitely have it on my list. Crazy that it was an Xbox exclusive, if they had more games like that I wouldn’t have ever switched back to PS
I’d also add Legend of Dragoon. Timeless classic

I owned the game years ago before trading my 360 for a PS3 at the time. Didn't get too far but also didn't know what was going on. But I really wish I had kept it. They really need to port that to new consoles and steam. Otherwise I will likely have to emulate it.

I find it odd that there is a “Best JRPGs of All Time” list that doesn’t seem to have a mention of Dragon Quest III or IV, Phantasy Star 2, Final Fantasy IV (II in US) or VI (III in US),
These 5 games were my gateway drugs in JRPG's. Suikoden II is one that should be on any list as well. Still my favorite game to this day.

Don’t get me wrong I like FF8 I just think it’s the worst of a really good franchise. They made some really poor gameplay decisions like the magic draw system. Squall as a protagonist was fine I guess but it’s clear they wanted to capitalize off the popularity of cloud. The whole damn thing goes so far off the rails even for an JRPG, and that’s saying something, around the middle of the second act. Supporting party members weren’t good or bad either just like much of the rest of the game to me, meh. The best parts were the laguna flashbacks lol

If you havent tried playing Legend of Dragoon (PSX) I would highly recommend it. IIRC the same team that made FF7 made this one as well. I feel like it is one of those hidden gems that never gets talked about enough.

Yeah I’m probably going to fire up Dragon Quest Xl now
, never played it

I’ve never played any of those games, and probably won’t, but I enjoyed reading the list.
I actually had to google what JRPG means.

Thanks man! Yeah JRPGs are there own thing and many (read almost all) are considerable time sinks compared to any other genre and any other triple A titles today. I always recommend people start Jrpgs with Final Fantasy 10. For one it’s pretty much universally loved at least I’ve never met a person who didn’t like it. It’s ps2 so the graphics are too crazy outdated and it has voice acting and everything. It encompasses a fair amount of the tropes of the genre literally beats to death it’s become a meme but it does it in such a way through such a powerful story that seriously has surprises and twist you’re not likely to see coming nor should you expect a happy ending for all. It really is kinda a fun for all catch all of the genre. Even though Persona 5 is my favorite game of all time it should not under any circumstances ever be anyone’s first ever Jrpg

Played this multiple times. One of my favorite all-time games, but always thought it was too easy with regular leveling. After my last playthrough (when the X/X-2 remaster was originally released in 2013-ish), I read up on how players were increasing difficulty - basically limiting themselves through the sphere grid by purposely skipping HP increases or defense increases or in some cases no spehere grid (NSG) leveling at all. That way you have to rely specifically on the right equipment, items and leveling up aeons. Always wanted to try a limited sphere grid run but never got around to starting one up.

I mean yeah, the end game balancing can be out of wack if you’re super obsessed with min maxing. The Dark Aeons and higher monster arena fights are better as fights at sphere levels between 160-225 depending on the fights, if you don’t split up the dark magus sisters them and penance are all that really require the max sphere level of 255 assuming you don’t cheese penance but frick me man is that thing w chore to try to take on straight up. I fully believe less than 5% of players are ever gong to attempt those fights though or do that chocobo dodge race from hell to get Tidus celestial weapon
As far as X-2 goes. Yeah it’s a shite sequel. They were dumb as frick for making a sequel to a game that had a clearly well defined and well earned emotionally deep clear ending. I do however think X-2 gameplay is some of the best in gaming history

I spent countless hours farming the monster arena so I could get all the PS4 trophies for the remaster. At least 100+ hours since you had to completely fill the sphere grid for EVERY character.
Beat every boss legit...until Penance. After all that time, I was so over the frickin game and so ready to be done with it, I just Zanmato'd his arse
I didn't even try one time to beat him in a normal fight

I zanamato him and then reloaded the save and did the waka overdrive cheese just to show him who was boss. Speaking of which, how is Yojimbo a completely optional aeon in this game, one you have to negotiate a contract with to work for you, and pay him for every move he makes? He’s the coolest of them all and I guarantee 90% of players don’t get him
