AC: NH sold 1.8m PHYSICAL units in it's first week in Japan. Add in the unreported digital downloads (speculated to be one of the most downloaded games of all time) and you have a new record in Japan.
Animal Crossing is a tier 1 Nintendo franchise. Mario. Zelda. Pokemon. Animal Crossing

Lol, ended up finding a Tarantula island last night and got an easy 160,000 to pay off the rest of the 348k in about 10 min. Hope to god I find that island again.

Is this basically Stardew Valley? Considering buying, but I got tired of Stardew Valley after 3 days.

Stardew Valley is much more similar to Harvest Moon than Animal Crossing.
AC is like if the Sims and Harvest Moon had a baby. Lots more customization for your house and village than you would find in Stardew Valley to my knowledge. It's also way more relaxing imo.

Animal Crossing has almost no goal except to continue to customize and tweak your town daily.
That's it. There's a very small story, very little to drive you outside of doing "chores" basically.
It's like a video game bonsai tree. You don't have to mess with it, but the art and joy of it is managing your island to a place you want it to get to. That's literally the only point.

I got this game yesterday basically because of this thread. I've never played an AC game before. I got Witcher 3 a few weeks ago, but with two girls under 4 at home with my wife and I both trying to work, that game was just way too much to undertake for the 30 minutes or so I get at night before going to bed. I liked the advice that this is a nice relaxing game. After playing for an hour last night, I definitely agree. It really help unwind me.
Having said all that, that brings up my question for you guys. There is no way I could ever play this game during the day. If I'm not working, it's my shift with my kids to entertain them. So, am I going to have to play in the dark all the time? Is that going to limit what I can do? I know people have mentioned time travel by manipulating the time on the console, but it seems weird that the only way to get around this is to "cheat the system". Although, I did buy the game thinking I could entertain my 3 year old with the cute characters. So, maybe I will try to get some daytime playing in.

there are setting in the switch that you can change to make it daytime or something. I have done it but the lady has...a few times to speed things up.

The bugs and fish you catch are most certainly affected. Also, the shop, once it opens, has opening hours between 8 am - 10 pm. There is a dropbox outside, but unfortunately it only gives you 80% of the bells that the regular shop owners (Timmy and Tommy) give you. Not to mention the hot item of the day won't give you double the bells at the drop box, and the drop box only gives you your bells on the following day.
Also, the day switches at 5 am on the following day, so you technically couldn't cheat the system by waking up early in playing, not that I would encourage you to do that .
It shouldn't really be that big of a problem for you to only play at night. They are doing events in the near future (next week is the first one iirc), so you might want to pay attention with timing on those. Otherwise, play away!

So myself and the kids have all paid off the first loans and have houses, have been there for a few days now, but the Nooks cranny upgrade "quest" still hasn't been unlocked or whatever for any of us. I read all the things online on how it's supposed to start but yet no luck. Did anyone do something in particular to get it going?

I heard it's Day 28
Oh wait are you talking about the first upgrade? Moving from the tent to a store?

Yes, but thankfully my daughter went in this morning and it kicked in.

I haven't bought a Nintendo console since the SNES but all the talk in here almost has me jumping back into the Nintendo ecosystem...almost...

Freauxzen, would you mind if I add you? Apparently it's impossible to get cherries since Pears were my primary fruit and Apples were my secondary. Supposedly, outside of those and the gift your mom sends you, it's impossible to get the other two fruits from random islands. I wish I'd have known that sooner instead of wasting all those damn miles.

So am I understanding correctly that if I wanted to travel to one of you guys islands, your gate would have to be open and I would select online then my friends?

I'm pretty sure that's how it works. They can only get to your island if you're online and your gate at the airport is open.

Did not know thisl. Let's definitely trade.

It's super lame that my girlfriend who is the secondary account, can't do anything to progress the story. Like why did Nintendo do this. Other than greed I can see no reason why we cant be co owners of the island
