Possibly my favorite game ever....and actually thought about buying a copy the other day. But the wife already says I spend enough time on the computer.

Love this game! Probably played it more than any other game. My favorite were the Spaniards or Mongols.

My personal favorite thing to do on Black Forest was to use catapults to clear the forest and attack a player that was using the forest as part of their wall.

Best RTS game of all time or greatest RTS game of all time?
Followed by Starcraft.

The blacksmith feature for the Spanish is alot more valuable than you think. Plus having 5 missionaries going into battle with the Conquistodors was always great. Here's how I'd rank my favorites
1) Turks
2) Spaniards
3) Koreans
4) Brits
5) Mongols

It was always great to send a small force at where they thought you were attacking then have everything in line to wipe the opponent out on the forest side. Then just destroy everything they built.

I was never a fan of the Turks, but then again, I played 99% DM games.

Pre-Imperial Age Turks are lousy but if you have a good economy they can take over the late games. Janis + Bombard Cannons rock shite.
Biggest unit knocks are no pikemen so you pretty much need to load up on camel to fend off cavalry, and no good onagers. And the aforementioned relative pre-Imp suckage.

Yeah, I was never an RM player, so I can't speak to early game turks. For Deathmatch, I always preferred siege heavy civs (Celts, Mongols, Koreans). I would imagine if you couldn't micro properly, those Janis could get eaten alive by a cav heavy civ. Then again, that's what the towers are for I supposed. Better hope your gold econ is booming.

Played the original a crapton though.

The original was classic. I loved it. I started playing the 2nd one, then tried to go back to the old one..I couldnt do it. The second one is just THAT much better.

Not sure why people hate on the mayans. Good rush civ, get an extra vil to start, resources last longer. It's not like they were the Vikings or Japanese.

God, forgot how horrible the Vikings were. They were the civilization I rushed to first, but quickly discovered how terrible they were.

Wouldn't it be awesome if facebook would take a step forward in the interactive/games community and form a stable java/html5 version of AoEII. Basically slim it down to just a multiplayer GUI and allow games to take place at will from within facebook, basically making it an app? The resources the game used then are surely becoming possible from within a browser now or the near future. I would be all for some form of RTS like the original C&C and AoE slimmed down to facebook. This would revitalize the veteran community in my opinion and would attract plenty of players by nature of facebook's user size.
A problem that ultimately led to the decline of the online size of these amazing classics was the online community being slowly diverged into a broadening range of multiplayer options IMO, not to mention consoles jumping into the mix.
I honestly miss the good ole days when online gaming first got big, there were only a handful of games in every genre that were available. I miss all those nights of hopping on TFC and CS online server lists and seeing thousands of players/servers active. Obviously SC2 still has thousands of loyal fans and its online community is surely thriving. I just noticed a decline in community size about the time RA2, Empire Earth 2, etc for RTS peaked. And when the Orange Box came out and put the nail in the coffin for TFC and split the valve community even more. Now COD and BF are the only two shooters with a respectable community size, but nothing like the good old days.
Note: This was ultimately the result of $$$ and EA arse slapping everybody IMO. Took out a lot of user customization/tweaking with code for scripting, and limited server admins from altering gaming experience as they wanted(Something that I LOVED about CS and TFC, and how the leagues had to constantly adjust the match rules that accommodated for new witty scripts/exploits players would create to gain an edge. I am strictly speaking of FPS here, but I think the lack of creativity/user customization put into new RTS games really caused them to lose their luster pretty quickly. SC2 is really the only one left that respected the users need for new things/custom maps/custom rules/ etc which keeps things interesting after a while.
Anyways, I think if FB and microsoft/EA could find a way to make this work, it would give fb a little luster back and give some old classic like AoE or C&C, as archaic as they are, a good chance at becoming very popular inside the FB community again. Obviously, it would need to not be resource heavy, and a lot of the game could be slimmed/removed completely. Just let users add app, join games, set a manageable amount of game rules, and go at it. I dont keep up with the java gaming type community usually used for browser games, but I can't see this not being feasible now or the near future

that would be badass. I would totally be on board for that. Trying to play that game now is tough. I can't stand gamespy. I always LOVED MSN when they hosted it.
And the jap civ was the worst of the two IMO. Sure you infantry attacked more quickly, but who ever really used it besides halbs (which you can get with a ton of other better civs). Their treb pack/unpack speed was nice, but not worth the penalty of having shitty everything else haha.
The vikings on water maps were beast though. And on land, they still had the most powerful rams and scorpions. Paired with Berserkers, not a totally bad deal if stuck with them on Random civ.
Google "aoe II civ bonus wiki" (no quotes) and click the first link. It's a complete list of the civs and all their bonuses and such. (couldnt get link to post correctly here). It's amazing how much of that stuff I remember still 10 years later.

i agree 100%. the most appealing thing to me about games like Starcraft, AOE II, and TFC was the user generated content, maps, and customizations.
dont see this too much more these days.

I didnt dabble much with custom content other than the different types of AI's you could play against. Other than the only user generated stuff I used were custom maps. Good ole Green Arabia.
