I think in my time with BotW, I'm in awe of how large the world feels. In actuality, I don't think it's much larger than Skyrim, but it feels much larger.
Skyrim is 2/3 the size of Hyrule.

Most of the side quests that I have done are of the fetch quest variety. For example, collect 10 mosquitos or kill x enemies.
Explore some more. There are far more quests than just collectathons.

Is it though? I read that BotW was only about 10% larger than Skyrim but either way, it's still really big.

Hyrule is 1.5 times the size of Skyrim but half of The Witcher 3: LINK
Honestly, Hyrule is about as big of a map as I would ever want. I hope the sequel is about the size of Skyrim as well.

I had my first “oh shite” moment today when I was down at the beach and decided to head back up the way I came. There is like this big cavern with a hole, so I climbed up there. Then I went to what looked like another cave and there was some massive pig nosed creature sleeping in it. I managed to kill him with a ton of arrows. First thing I’ve fought of that size and it was such a weird innocuous way to get to him. Makes me want to explore even more to see what lurks in weird places.

This speaks to a point of one video I watched.
The game rewards your for every sense of adventure/curiosity.

I'm still really early in the game I assume. I went to Zora land and tried to face the Lynel with 3 hearts and weapons with around a 20-ish rating. Didn't go well. Now currently trapped in Gerudo desert until nightfall.
At first I really hated how fragile the weapons are, but now kind of enjoying finding new weapons and shields.

I don't like this mechanic at all. My problem is that I find a weapon whose design I really like then it breaks after a couple battles and I'm stuck using some crappy club.
For standard weapons that you find in the world (rusty sword) or that you look from monsters (moblin club), I'm fine with the low durability but it doesn't make sense for quest rewards (Zora Trident) or the loot from chests in shrines to break so easily.
Then broken weapons can never be repaired. Once the weapon breaks, you essentially loose it forever which is dumb.

Get some balls and go to Hyrule Castle or slay some Lynels or Hinoxes. I was playing last night and I’ve got 16 slots with nothing but awesome weapons. The good weapons are out there, you just have to have balls to go get them.

I did my first major test of strength the other day, and got a 60 attack guardian sword, and a 70 attack guardian Axe. Legit weapons can be found if you just fight for them.

Ooh!
How do you add slots?
And what was up with that clue about adding stamina or hearts via some guy in the far off reaches of the land?

You haven't found the Korok that you exchange the seeds with? You first run into him around Karkariko Village (can't miss him), then at the Forest Stable, and then he just stays in the Korok Forest.

I'd recommend going for Stamina over Hearts typically. You're going to die regardless early on, and one or two hearts isn't that much of a help. A bit more stamina though lets you climb for much longer though. Definitely essential if you are going to conquer the towers.

Finally saw my first Lynel. He shot at me. I ran.

Beat it for the first time last night. It's speaks really well for a game (especially an open world game) that I want to go play it again after just beating it. In most open world games I get slogged down and end up not picking them back up for a while (I still haven't finished Witcher 3, and I love that game).
Like someone said, it really rewards you for exploration. At the very least, you're liable to find a Korok in almost any location you go.
Also, I too didn't really like the weapon mechanic until I figured out how to sneak into Hyrule Castle and snatch some awesome weapons. From that point on I usually had too many to carry, and my choices were preference rather than necessity.
You can go kill Ganon at any time, but I definitely recommend getting all of the memories. They really flesh out the story and characters, especially Zelda.
Finally, Majora's mask is OP if you're dealing with monsters.

Damn, I just named mine Turd

I called mine Shadowfax.
If I caught a huge horse that had Epona's coloring, I'd call her that.

I finally got all the shrines and beat the story yesterday. That was intense. An awesome experience that I didn't want to end, but my son was bugging me to play it so I wrapped it up and let him start a new game.

Nice. I've done 3 divine beasts, and about 70 shrines so far. Still have a ways to go.
