I looked at the butter tortillas PNW mentioned and they are full of shite ingredients but I'm gonna go get some this week and see if they are amazing. Thing is, I can literally walk to 4 places that make fresh tortillas daily .

You need to go inside one. The deli, meat and seafood dept is absolutely top notch. Better than Kroger, Walmart, Super 1 combined.

They sell everything you need, have 20 registers and 20 people manning them with baggers. I wish we had them here instead of having self checkout at every goddamn store.

I've shopped at many HEBs and they are fine but no better than other big box grocery stores. And I was in one in North Austin a month ago and it was like being in a Walmart.

HEB is so far ahead of Kroger on so many levels of product quality this isn't even a conversation.

You’re insane if you don’t think HEB is the best grocery chain.

Even friends from Florida that are Publix die hards have admitted it once they’ve gone.

The HEB store brand stuff is better than most of the name brands

I'm not Texan and wouldn't consider living there, but I've visited relatives and been in a few HEB stores, regular and super. I've been in a Kroger maybe 20 times and from what I can tell, it's not in the same league as HEB. Cleaner, better environment, better selection.

You've asked others to explain why HEB is better and they've done a poor job, but I ask you, how are they the same? You must hold some grudge against Mr. Butt or his family.

I don't eat at fast food joints, so when I travel through Texas, an HEB is a place that I know will satisfy all of my food needs.

The Kroger I go to is very clean and modern but it also is in a fairly high end demographic part of town.

I have no love for Kroger, or any other grocery store. I only go there once every couple of months because it's next door to where I swim. And I have no hate for HEB I just don't get the cult like status it has similar to Bucees. If HEB was where my Kroger is I would go to HEB.....and I may have been drinking when I posted that comparison
I see both of them, and the other big store I sometimes go to, Tom Thumb, as generic stores that carry basic stuff. And I know HEB carries a bunch of Texas made stuff and I've tried various Texas salsas, chips and I can't remember what else from HEB and it's all fine but nothing I need to go buy again. I actually have a Central Market near where I swim and I go there maybe once a month mainly because their beer selection is better than Whole Foods. And they have a decent Muff olive salad that I will get for taoenande and to make home made muffs. But it has a terrible layout which makes it a shitty experience , it always crowded and checkout lines are long and you can only turn right to get out of the parking lot and I need to go left so that's a PIA. But I did do the landscape design for it a long time ago, so there's that.

i remember really enjoying HEB in the 90s when i was dirt poor and every penny counted. what i recall was the food quality was good and prices were great.

then again i used to also drive 25 minutes out of my way to hit the Auchans Hypermart

that thing was crazy.

You are just so edgy, baw.

HEB is the gold standard of what grocery stores should be.

There actually was an HEB IN Lake Charles for a short while. But it was tiny and not really on par with Texas HEB’s.

Yep, the Market Basket on Nelson Road is the old HEB in Lake Charles.

In La we came within 36hrs from getting a lot of HEB's! In 2014 Mr. Brookshire died and the heirs to the 200 stores...which included Super 1 foods in La...wanted to cash out! There was one heir who was active in the grocery business and didn't want to sell but he was having trouble getting financial backing to buy out the other heirs. They retained an investment banker to move the business...Albertson's and HEB made strong bids with the heirs voting on the HEB buyout terms...well 36 hrs before the closing the one heir Brad Brookshire secured financing that allowed him to buy out the other heirs . The other heirs got a comparable deal to HEB and the family grocery business survived. Hence La come very close to having a lot of HEB's. Now if only Donny Rouse would sell his La stores to HEB so he can go Marlin fishing full-time !
