No this was the one held for a long time at the UNO arena. The last three years or so it was at Mardi Gras World.
I enjoyed it because it's the first festival I started attending. Loved the large number of home brew groups they welcomed in. And the Friday night VIP tasting was kick arse.

If I'm remembering correctly, the breweries cannot donate the beer to the charity or to the distributor. The breweries must sell it to the distributor at fair market, and then the distributor must sell it to the charity, also at fair market. The breweries then have to cut a check to the distributors for the value of their beer, then the distributors cut a check to the charity to reimburse them for buying it originally. Now that's just the commercial side of things.
The charity must also attain several permits from the state and from the city of New Orleans. Last year there was a big question on liability insurance that they kind of brushed away temporarily, but that might have come back up.
On the homebrew side of things, and I'm out of the loop a little bit, but I think we nailed that down last year. As long as WYES had the special events permit and as long as the clubs were registered as a vendor with the city, they could give away as much beer as they wanted.
A couple of the current presidents might have some more recent information.

I suspect it is that festivals need to buy the beer they will serve (instead of having it donated).
This was the case last year and was addressed during the 2014 legislative session.
While the 2014 session corrected the beer donation issue. I don't think it addressed several other problem areas like allowing distributors to donate equipment and allowing their employees to work their booths.
I know at one point 'Brew at the Zoo' was told all servers at commercial tables needed to be licensed bartenders. Homebrewers were not included in that so I don't know where it ended up.

I'm not sure which party you feel is trying to sell you a line.
WYES isn't saying it's impossible to put on the event. They are simply saying that due to increase regulatory costs the beer festival is no longer a cost effective fund raiser.

yeah re the servers last year for a few months they made special events hire bartenders, but am fairly certain that backed off.
Todd Price just updated his article, sounds like the volunteers serving beer werent able to provide the educational benefit that brewers or salesman would and that impacted decision.
Reading between the lines, its probably the lawyers and insurance policy who are to blame.

A bar card is $20 and a short class.. and lasts a few years. Surprised people couldn't just scrounge some friends together.
I don't work in bars/restaurants anymore, but I am legal to serve it.

Ah I see. That is unfortunate indeed.

Yup, I have one. It's not hard at all to get.

Must have been all the numerous liability issues that arose from this event in the past.

We had a good run of people not giving a shite about the rules. Hopefully Zapps isn't affected. Best beer festival in the state, imo.

The brilliancy of government regulations and red tape.
Sucks that WYES won't be put on anymore. Was really a great event. And you couldn't even smoke inside.

The long and short of it is, they just weren't making the money. And the past few years, I have heard from people that it wasn't worth the $$.

Not worth the money? Nah, someone must have went to the event at Campions Square and has the events confused.

Other than a few years back when some drunk moron broke the elevator at UNO.
The next year WYES put an employee on the elevator for the entire event to make sure it didn't happen again.
