Wtf happened to Sammy’s on Highland?!?

Been going there for over 20 years and was a regular family dinner spot. But last 2 times we’ve been have been complete shite. This last time was so bad that we have unfortunately decided to never go back. Staff and people there are still great but food has degraded badly.

White supremacy ruined that place.

I haven’t had anything bad, but it’s nothing like it used to be. I go occasionally because I like the bar area, but even that is hit or miss because a lot of their regulars get absolutely tanked.
Not that the food is anything special either, but George’s replaced Sammy’s for me in the past year.

George’s across the way is far superior.

Even that George's has gone significantly downhill

It was great in its heyday before the (former) management completely tanked it. So if the OP is expected the Sammmy's from 20 years ago he's not going to get it because, other than the name and building, is literally not the same Sammy's as 20 years ago.
IMO, the food is fine for an easy Friday/Saturday night meal with the family. And the prices are relatively reasonable (compared to similar places).

The appeal of George's for me is everything BUT the quality of the food. Employees, patrons, atmosphere, beer in a napkin-jacket, vast selection of food choices.. love it all. The actual quality of said food is just okay.
I go every Saturday, and it's for the other named reasons.

Willy's was bombing on crawfish too last season.
My new favorite crawfish spot is Hot Tails on Airline in Prairieville.

Georges can at least do a pretty good burger and fries. Sammmys cant even do that well anymore. The rest of the menu I can get at any other bar and grill in town and its usually better. Its really too bad. I ate at the old Sammys twice a week for 20 years until it just got so terrible I couldnt do it anymore.
I really miss their chicken club sandwich, bayou catfish and chicken fried steak

I know I'm in the minority but I never cared for Sammy's, ever. Always felt it was one of the more overrated places in town.

They kicked out the good Judge, and it has been all downhill since.

Back in the 90's it was just small neighborhood bar and grill with really solid food. As time went on and it really started expanding I could not understand why anyone would wait out side for 30min-hour for table.

We used to be constantly in shock by how many people you'd see waiting outside when driving by. Honestly any place with that kind of wait blows my mind, but especially for Sammy's type of food.
That said, I see why it was popular in general. It had something for everyone, which is important when you're getting Grandpa, everyone's young kids, heavy drinker Uncle, etc. together.

What time will you be there? Are you married?

I lived right down the road in the late 80s, and brunch at Sammy's was the ultimate hangover spot.

I feel attacked by this.

George’s has one of the more reliable Poboy options in BR.
I agree that I never got the appeal of Sammy’s. In its heyday it was good, but there are 15 places in BR to get that quality and type of food. I don’t understand how they had a line out the door ever week.
