Mine just has 1 temp zone, and I would definitely get a dual zone if I had to choose again. That being said, I love the little guy(12 bottle) and it gets used constantly. :drunks:

I have a cheap 12 bottle single zone stand-alone. I like having it. A dual zone would be nice too, but probably cost a lot more.

Mine never stays full for long.

I have the single temp zone and works fine...I store all my wines in the cooler and simply move the whites or champagne to the frige 20 min. before serving...I can see the use for it but if the money is a lot more it would be easy to give up the dual zone.

everyone I know has to buy a new one every 1-2years because the heat sink pos always craps out. We decided to wait and get an actual compressor driven one for the next house instead of continuing to buy one of the other types again.

I don't think a dual temp zone is a necessity, in fact I think that kind of stuff is grossly over rated. You want something that will keep a steady temperature in the 55-65 degree range. And even then, that is if you're going to be laying bottles down for years. I have a 120 bottle unit in my house that I bought in 2003 for $900 or so. I think it's made by Franklin or some no name brand. I have friends with VinoTemp and EuroCave units and they've been happy with them. Most of my stuff is at an off site storage facility in Oakland (still, a year and a half after moving back to LA!). I've been thinking about moving it here but there's no place to store it in Lafayette and I don't feel like shelling out $10K to buy enough storage units to store it. I need to buy a house and build a cellar. Sorry, I'm rambling.

I have a Viking 15in under-counter 24 bottle for wine and an opposing cooler that holds 48 bottles of beer. It has a single temp which has never been a problem. I don't know if it's a good value, there are plenty of less expensive coolers out there but it was the only one that did what I wanted it to do.
The one on the left.

Cuisinart 16-Bottle is perfect ($200). You do not need a dual temp unit as you want to store both red and white at 50-55 degrees.

great info all. thanks.

i'm noticing a lot of them have clear glass doors. Is this ok? Does this not allow UV light in and harm the wine? should i look for one with a tinted or non-glass door?

If you're planning on drinking the wine within a year or two, it doesn't make a difference. What you want to avoid is wide swings in temperature, vibration and long exposure to intense light.

el tigre, there's an article on "How To Store Wine" on my blog that you might want to check out.

As others have said, a single temperature cooler will work fine. That's what i have and I've never had any troubles.

Here's a link to the article on my blog.
