There's no doubt a plethora of hops, but you must be blind if you're missing everything else. There are more than 5000 breweries in the US, and they don't all make hop-forward beers.

Honestly I probably wouldn't be in the craft beer scene if it weren't for hoppy, juicy IPAs. I like stouts too, but IPAs are my go to. I tried getting into sours but couldn't get a taste for them.

Much easier to hop the hell out of something and make it drinkable and repeatable.
Not true. When is the last time you had a stout that was awful? I've had plenty of terrible IPAs. If dumping hops into an IPA was all it took to make a beer taste good, how come there are so many bad IPAs?

I went to a bottle share at Side Project about 5 months ago. I had some pretty terrible *adjunct* stouts there. Just god-awful heavy handed use of cinnamon or vanilla, or just cloyingly sweet.
But yeah, a good, basic, drinkable stout seems like it would be easier technically than making a well balanced, drinkable IPA.

Here in Portland, the only breweries going out of business are the ones that refuse to brew IPAs.
Last night, I was at the new Modern Times brewery, which is located in the building that used to house The Commons Brewing. By most accounts, The Commons brewed fine beers per style, but they went out of business because they focused on farmhouse ales, and not enough people drank their beers to pay the bills. They were stubborn and refused to "give in" to the trends and it cost them.
Ironically, the last beer they brewed before closing the doors was an American IPA they called, "We Get It Now". The Commons will be back in the near future, and I suspect they will have some IPAs in their lineup.

quote:What on earth? The barleywine is fine, and a Stone stout shout-out is certainly odd.
Their quad sucks....their barleywine sucks, their stouts aren't even in the same stratosphere of stone.
