Why Does Food Prepared by Someone Else Seem to Taste Better?

And don't say it's because I can't cook.

Seriously, I prefer the taste of food prepared for me, even if the ingredients are exactly the same. I think that's one reason it's hard to duplicate a restaurant's dish at home.

I am hardly ever satisfied with the food I cook, always thinking it should be better. Maybe it is pride.

Yeah, I don't find that to be the case usually.

I used to feel that way about salads, but now I like mine better.

I might prefer labor intensive foods prepared by others better. :)

you are not as judgmental and you are a lot hungrier.

I tend to try my food while I am cooking. I am never starving when its done.

This is definitely one exception... I prefer fried foods to be by someone else.

Yea and certain ethnic food. Sometimes it's fun, but a lot of the time it's cheaper and easier just to go to a restaurant. Sushi, Indian, etc.

At home cause I'm sitting there drinking while the food is being cooked. If it comes out bad, I can always beat the cook

For long cooks it's the smell.

For sandwiches? I have no idea.

Yep. I'm probably not ever going to make pho at home. Or sushi, etc.

Both of these reasons make sense. And it also explains why food tastes better the next day - you haven't been tasting it and smelling it before you reheat and eat it.

I disagree except for some exotic or complex dishes.

I won't even order steaks, hamburgers, grilled fish or certain other things out because I can have it exactly how I like it at home. And it's not just me, my wife says the same thing. And she's a picky bitch when it comes to food.

i agree with this. after 4 hours of cooking a jambalaya im just tired of looking at that pot and want no part of it. regardless of how good it tastes. i've also usually ate enough during the cooking to be full anyways.

I think I've gotten pretty damn good at cooking over the years. Better than a lot of people, worse than some. But when I cook something, especially something that takes a while, I can't hardly eat it when it's ready. I'm just not hungry. Could be the vodka tonics. Could be the smell. Might be the nibbling here and there. Not real sure. I usually do my damage to the leftovers the next day...

eta- I see this is already being dicussed

Definitely not true for me. I'm on the other side of the spectrum: I often think, "I just paid for THAT? Could have stayed home and eaten better."
