they prefer name brands that they believe elevates their status. "Crown & Coke" (loud enough that other people can hear, then looks around to see which girl believes he's rich now all of a sudden)

What universe do you live in that Crown and Coke is a status symbol? I am a beer guy, but when i drink whiskey, it's typically crown (or a blended whiskey). Crown is only a status symbol if you are hanging out at Reggie's among the other teenagers.

What a strange discussion. Not sure why you think this is a N.O. thing.
Talk to the folks in the business and they will tell you that Texas people drink a shite load of crown. Much more than any other state I think.

My friends from Baton Rouge and old college buddies from all over the state drink crown like crazy.

Friend and relatives from NOLA all prefer Crown and order it out and have a supply of it at home.

Friends and relatives from other areas of the country never mention Crown or order it and have other Bourbons and Whiskeys in stock.

I've never been to a place in or even near NO that either had or even heard of Old Charter. I end up having to drink Makers.

Well obviously that means everyone in NOLA loves it. I live in NOLA and won't touch Crown, but I'm sure that's not relevant data.

Crown is popular and sells for the same reason that BMC beers and liquors like Grey Goose sell -- branding. Dedicated whiskey and bourbon drinkers GENERALLY don't drink Crown exclusively. Crown drinkers are generally people that haven't tried other liquors that are perceived as better by most people that know about these sort of things. It's not rocket science.

I'm just catching this thread. Maybe I missed the link to the research behind this theory. I live in NOLA and I lived in BR for college. I'm not sure I've had crown since college.

OP is from Tennessee? Great, thanks for posting.

A whole lot of this...

The other thing is that once people get away from mixers with bourbon (water, rocks, neat), they tend to explore more in-depth whiskeys, because they know what to look for taste-wise, as opposed to simply having a mixed drink.
