Why are the reviews of the Traeger so drastic? Either ppl love them or have issues.

User error or product issue?
Looking at the Traeger Tailgater.

They might love them until they start having issues.

i've actually noticed this across the board for pellet smokers.
I'm new to using my pellet grill, but I can tell you without a doubt that it does not have the quality smoke flavor of a stick or coal burning grill.

I have had my Pro22 for 3-4 years and love it for what it does. It cooks up great smoked meat without having to tend the fire. There are heats you may need an extra source of smoke to add that extra flavor, but overall I have loved mine. It's a decent quality unit but there are better ones.
Does it do better than an offset or something like that? No
However, I have done plenty of pulled pork, ribs, turkey, chicken, and just did my best brisket that rival a many of the BBQ places or offset that I have had. You get better the more you use it and understand what you're doing.
Admittedly I have never hit some of the top joints like a Franklin's.
When I get my next pellet grill it will be bigger, can burn hotter, and better quality.
I will still do some offset and I am going to try barrel que
Also, there are other options similar to Traeger at a better price. Just understand what it is you are wanting to do and make sure you choose a unit that meets your expectations. Pellet grills in general help a lot of people that enjoy smoked meat an easy option to do that without great knowledge or requiring a lot of effort tending your fire which for me is also fun at times.
Look at warranties and learn how the companies help. I have heard Traeger has gone china and has lost some of the customer service they once had.

Biggest complaint I've seen with them is they don't get hot enough to use as just a regular grill. But seems to me that should have been known before purchase.

Get yourself one of these and it will enhance your smoke, especially at higher heats where most pellet grills lose smoke from the pellet feed.

I hate pellet cookers in general. Not a knock on them, I just dont get near the results I get from an offset if smoking, or weber if grilling.

This 100%. Mine shuts off when it gets around 450.
Searing meats is almost impossible.
But does make some killer briskets.

It's called an A-MAZE-N smoker tray or tube. I use the tray in my Masterbuilt vertical electric smoker rather than the shitty wood chip tray that it came with.
You fill it with pellets and let it smolder, it can provide quality smoke for 8-12 hours

Looking at the Traeger Tailgater.
It's an incredible premium for ease of use, while providing an inferior product.
Just got a traeger, smoke is nowhere near as good as a standard smoker, but not having to temperature watch is beneficial and ease of pellet use/wood types make it better.
Is it worth the money? No? Do I care though? No not really either. I am at work right now with a brisket going and should be close to good to go by the time I get off

I have had mine for a year. Timberline model. Mine gets to 495-500 on temp a cooks a very good steak when I use the combination pellets. I have not had any problems yet and being able to watch the smoker and meat ramps online in 90 degree plus heat while sipping a drink and watching tv is much more relaxing than sitting out in that heat babysitting meat. You use it more often as well I find. I’m sure any other smoker with the online capability would be as good or better.

Just get a Weber Smoky Mountain. You can still set and forget and your results will crush anything you smoke with pellets.

They moved production to China a few years back and it seems like the quality and specs went down.

Forget Traeger, I got a Camp Chef XXL and it is amazing. I can fit SO Much meat on it and it is set it and forget it as far as temp. I did burgers and chicken on it today @300, it stayed within 298-300 the entire time the door was shut.
I did a brisket a couple of weeks ago, overnight cook at 225 and it did great.
The smoke flavor is fine.
