Possibly. You don't think the dining industry has done profitability studies on this kind of thing?

Nope. I think they have an antiquated mind set just like you did in your previous post.

Eh depends. High end spots will have people who care about wine. You’ll even get a bunch of wannabe somms who try to show off.

I’ve seen some beer pairing stuff but it seems to be one offs to promote the breweries not something permanent like wine pairings.

I find most high end places around here have a nice half dozen or so good beers available. I sometimes order them, but I mostly go with cocktails at high end places as beer is too filling. If I'm forking over a good bit on food, it's all going down the hatch.

True. But I'm not a wine drinker, and neither are most of my friends. When we go to a nice restaurant, there is always the expectation that you drink wine with dinner, especially if we have one person in the group who wants to order bottles. More restaurants are offering better wines by the glass, too, and that makes it easier for the beer drinkers to get beer, and restaurants are offering craft beer, as well.

There was a hilarious Budweiser commercial during the game related to the overenthusiasm about craft beers. LMFAO.

I think the majority of people who go to high end restaurants and refuse to drink anything other than beer are usually the types who order Miller Lite or Coors Light no matter the setting. Others who appreciate craft beer would probably appreciate a nice old fashioned or glass of wine when at a nice restaurant.

Educate yourself and learn there is more to beer than that fizzy yellow stuff you drink.

Yeah it was ok. I just hate that the janky type guys and all who use the stupid hipster and neck beard crap all the time have something like that to hang their hat on.

I agree with you. Their offerings don’t need to match The Bulldog, but a little thought into going one level deeper would be appreciated.

Gramercy Tavern is one high end place that has put some effort into their beer list.
Gramercy Tavern - The Tavern Beer List
Prairie Bomb is $24 which Is roughly the same 2.5x retail pricing restaurants use for wine so it’s priced fine.

Good lord those prices are ridiculously high. Nothing reasonable about that.

You sure are knighting pretty hard for something as silly as beer.

They really aren’t high. A bottle of Meiomi is $19.99 at a store and $50 at a restaurant. Why is a $10 bottle of Bomb “high” at $24? Any of those Other Half’s listed are $5 at the brewery. A $6 bottle of Bud Light has a much higher markup vs retail compared to these.

More traditional restaurants Predate the craft beer craze and probably don’t want to commit to larger tap systems.

Newer high end places are better

But they’re definitely pushing wine and cocktails with 400% markups.

How big's the bottle? And i was noticing the prices for everything else, not so much Bomb. It just seems, like you said, they applied a standard markup on everything. Gramercy Tavern is in NY, so i guess they are paying double what we pay in restaurants just because of the cost of living up there.

For comparison, some of the things we get here, and here are the prices at retail from a store

Upright Seven Saison - 1 bomber is $15, at GT its $50.
Bell's 2 hearted for $11 for a 12 oz., we can get it for $3 or less in a store. So apply 2 to 3 times the markup. Those beer prices would steer me more towards wine/liquor. That is, unless, the wine/bourbon prices are equally high by the glass.

It doesn't even have to be new taps. Buy a case of goose island sofie, for example. It's a great saison, that would speak to a large cross section of people. I find it's delicate and shares similarities to wine.

Don't get me wrong, i drink wine and bourbon when we go out. I'll usually drink bourbon until the meal comes, then switch to wine, but on occasion, i'd rather have a good beer than wine with my meal.

We're going to Ruffino's for Christmas eve dinner. Haven't been there in a while, i hope they have some more beer options.
