Crawfish/Crayfish (imported farmed)

Does this mean they won't be selling Chinese crawfish any more? Because I seriously doubt that Louisiana Crawfish are anywhere close to being unsustainable.

It can be found on the Applebee's Flavors of Bourbon Street menu.

If you were a cheesemaker, you'd love them.

That said, someone needs to bring me some 5 year gouda and some grapes.

They turned me on to trying different cheeses, but now that I (kind of) know what I'm talking about I have found local places to go to instead of Whole Foods.

I always found it odd that places carry the "red" fish. If you hold yourself to the stature that they do, yet you still carry fish that are unsustainable, you just come across as dumb.

How is a farm raised fish "unsustainable"?

Not sure. I avoid that farm raised stuff because of elevated mercury levels. But most here likely view me as a hippie.

Something about genetically modified fish escaping and spreading super fish viruses. Not sure. Just what I remember reading one time.

Its Whole Foods way of trying to cull the market.. Decrease demand on what many of there vocal patrons feel is bad business and not "green". In all honsesty, it pushes them back to their roots as The original Organic specialty grocer. Whatever floats there boat.

I'm not a big fan of farm raised fish, but I thought the elevated mercury levels were more a problem with the wild stuff and not the other way around?

Redfish is far from being unsustainable.

I suppose they won't. I looked at the little guide on the website and US farmed crawfish are listed as a best choice.

A lot of the fish on the list are imported where there is overfishing going on in some of those countries. The few fish I see that is on the list that are not overfished are:

Red Snapper
Vermillion Snapper
Sharks
Grouper

The above species are barely commercially fished and are abundant in the gulf.

Some of the other fish I have no idea on like the fish in the north (salmon,skate,etc.). This is obviously a PR move by Whole Foods and will raise the price on a lot of their fish to the public. Wild salmon is a lot more expensive compared to Farm. Certain species of wild salmon that is.
