Ate there this evening for our annual Bourbon Raffle/Annivesary/Christmas dinner.

This was the first time I did not enjoy my meal there, I've been MANY times.

I had their special "Butter Steak". To me, it was more like a beef roast smothered in gravy and veggies, served with mashed potatoes.

I'm not even sure what cut of steak it was. It was stringy like a roast.

I didn't return it because it wasn't bad, it's just that I didn't enjoy it, especially for the price. My daughter's filet was 1000x better.

Anyone here have it yet?

Ruffino's has fallen far since it's apex (before they opened in Lafayette). We went for Thanksgiving, mostly because it was one of the few places open. I ordered the "Grand Thanksgiving Dinner", or something like that, for $32.50. Swanson's or Banquet frozen dinners would have been a better choice.

I don't know what's going on over there, but it's not good, they are living on their reputation and ambiance, the food is going downhill.

Must be a good reputation they are living off of. I went Tuesday night for a little event and both private rooms were rented out for parties and the restaurant was full. At 7:00 the only place left to grab a seat to eat was the bar.

I was at one of the parties on the side room. The passed around food and the soup I tried was good. Hard to judge a place on that alone.

I have never thought their food was anything great or special. I would much rather go to Gino's, DiGulio's or Nino's for Italian food.

Why would one would order a steak and not know the cut? I consider myself addicted to red meat... but there are plenty of cuts I do not like, and certainly wouldnt order. Ever.

That said, I cannot speak to the “Butter Steak,” but I dine at Ruffinos pretty regularly. Since they started dry-aging their own beef, I really enjoy their Ribeye. Understanding Dry Aged Beef is not for everyone, I rarely recommend it. My wife loves steaks, but does not care for aged.

I get that its an “Italian” restaurant, but I dont go there for italian dishes. They have plenty of solid apps and fish/meat entrees to make me return often.

Ahhhh...” Our Special Tonight “
My friends in the restaurant business say never order “ The Special “, usually the oldest meats they need to sell before throwing away.

I've gotten the dry age steak there before and I can't say it tasted any different than a normal steak and I doubt it was prime. Not sure if they claim their dry age steaks to be prime or not but I was pretty disappointed overall. And I do enjoy a dry age steak. I would recommend Delmonico's in Nola if you want to try one that'll blow Ruffino's out of the water.

Peter Sclafoni is too busy with all of the things they have going on now, and their head chef within the restaurant left fairly recently to do his own in-house dinners thing

But I would never order a steak with a sauce on it and expect it to be better than a filet. Smh OP

So true. They are in the back screaming at servers to push the special so they don’t have to throw money in the dumpster.

I'm sure this is true at some places, but I've had "specials" at restaurants that are never on the menu. How would you explain that this cut was going to go bad if it was never on their menu?

Yeah I'm not buying that theory that was posted earlier about the specials.
Most of the time the special is just that and not something the kitchen needs to get rid of

I've heard it said before, but I don't think it's the case at most places either. Places like City Pork or Merchant have a different special every day that's never on the menu.

They have some great apps but the last time I had their steak it was below average at best

The potatoes that came with it were terrible

I go there to sit at the bar, drink, and watch 40 year old woman get drunk on their husbands dime

Haven’t been in a couple years but last time I went my girlfriend was unable to come so I bought her their “special” of the night which was a seafood platter. When I got it home and she opened up the bag and box she thought I had eaten some. It was the most pitiful excuse for a seafood platter I had ever seen. A combo box from Captain D’s would have been better. Called and left a message for the manager but he never responded.

It's great people watching

Then 4miles gets the manager to get the bourbon out of the closet and we proceed to try and get kicked out of the place

Higher quality restaurants don’t put the bad stuff as a special. Restaurants like Ruffino’s have dealers for certain food items, and at specific times of the year they’ll be offered better prices or seasonal items. Good restaurants take advantage of those, especially the seasonal items or specialty items not normally on the menu, to give their regulars something interesting and different to order every time they come in

Edit: like crawfish specials during crawfish season, oyster specials, crab, etc. Almost every special is because a dealer gave the restaurant a good offer for a limited time

Yeah that would be no. I’ve eaten at Ruffinos since before it was Ruffinos and 1/ I’ve never seen a seafood platter and 2/ if I had it would be the last thing I would think to order.

If by some reason you called the manager his not responding is simple he considered you a dumbass.

And he would be correct.

You can think whatever you want. It was there, whether you choose to believe it or not. Had fish, shrimp, deviled crab (or something like that), and gumbo or bisque I believe. Whether or not it's something you would choose to order is besides the point. She loves seafood and I thought she would enjoy it. I was sadly mistaken, due to the portion sizes. It was more like an appetizer sampler.
