First mistake is the temperature, I want a steaming bowl of gumbo, not lukewarm. A lot of places get off on a bad footing on this point alone.

Sometimes they forget to microwave it before it comes to the table

Juban's is the shat. I too like it dark and a little more on the thick side than dirty water looking gumbo like they have at Jambalaya Shoppe. That gumbo is garbage.

Jones Creek Cafe has the best chicken and sausage gumboalso I've had in a while. Their seafood one is legit too, but it has a much darker roux compared to their chicken.

Their shrimp and corn soup is very good also

Not in Baton Rouge, but the the "barnyard gumbo" at Dick and Jenny's in New Orleans is the best I ever had.

Not technically in BR, but I had some excellent gumbo at a small restaurant named Taste of Louisiana cafe in Denham Springs.

Yall are correct.... A great bowl of gumbo is all in the eye of the spoon holder.

Hands down the best restaurant gumbo I've eaten was at Mandinas on Canal in Nola..... It was a perfect seafood gumbo, even gives you a crab claw in every bowl. (see pic of mandinas gumbo)

Back to Baton Rouge..... Dempsey's is pretty good for C&S and another no one has mentioned is the Jambalaya SPOT in Port Allen (I know not technically BR but close enough). They do a really good C&S gumbo and try the Gumbalaya if you go.... Huge lunch for under $10.

Chicken: Jambalaya Shoppe when served over chicken & sausage jambalaya rice
Close second is Dempsey's

Seafood: The Chimes

Other: The Chimes (duck & andouille)

[quote]IMO, taste in gumbo is shaped by the gumbo you had in your family/childhood growing up and that's what all gumbos are judged against[/quote

If all Gumbo tasted the same the world would be a boring place.
