You could start with Buffalo Trace if you want a easy drinking cheaper bourbon. Apple flavor with a very easy drinking mouthfeel.
However, your best bet might be to start with an Irish Whiskey. They are much lighter, fruity, and floral than American whisky, which has a deeper vanilla, caramel, and oak flavor to it. If you like beer, look for Jameson Caskmates, right around $25, and it's Irish whiskey aged in former stout beer barrels.
Just my two cents.

My friend swears by Isaac Bowman Port Finish. It’s right at $40 I believe. I haven’t had it yet, but he says it’s on par with that Angela envy rye.
Don’t do Old Forrester. It’s a high proof which you want to stay away from. You want to stick with the 80-90 proof range to start.
I can’t stress enough how good angels envy is though. Yes it’s a high price point, but it makes non whiskey drinkers like whiskey.
Irish whiskeys are great for what you’re looking for as well. Writer’s Tears is fantastic at about $35, but it’s not easy to find. Acquitioace in Mandeville still has some I believe, but I don’t know where you live. Jameson is an easy entry whiskey as well.

Yeah that stout one was pretty damn good.

Thanks for all the suggestions for all who chimed in. I’ve got some homework to do! I’m in OKC so I shall go to my nearest liquor store and start the process.

Time to call it a day. I hope everybody got through Mother’s Day unscathed.
