Let me know how that is. I recently picked up an old-ish bottle of Turkey and wasn't impressed. Not sure on how the bottle had been stored and if that impacted but I wasn't impressed.

I saw a blind tasting with 101 and rare breed a while back on Reddit I think. They pretty much disproved the whole old turkey is always the best turkey. The latest offerings beat out many of the older juice. That being said the overall winners were older bottles.
EDIT: Found em. They were on The Whiskey Jug blog. I enjoyed the reads. But then again I'm kind of a wild turkey fanboy. Also that split label bottle showed very well. I'm looking forward to hearing if you enjoy it.

1PD SAOS SB9 cask (always love the first pour on new bottle). This definitely packs more heat than my other two OS7 and OS10. I added a bit of water and oh my word.

Thanks, that was a good read. I've always heard the split label was really good but the cheesy gold foil is supposed to be the best of the 101's. Even though I love Wild Turkey, I just can't see myself spending the money required to get a gold foil.

Looking for advice and don't have time to read thru 100+ pages.
Gimme suggestions on a decent whiskey in the $40-50 range that's reasonably available in the BR area.

What do you or if it is a gift, what do they normally drink? Might help us give a suggestion. My favorites in that price range are EH Taylor Small Batch, Blanton's, Single barrel picks of Four Roses, Knob Creek, or Smooth Ambler Old Scout.

You want whiskey or bourbon?

OK, just to clear that up, bourbon. I didn't pay attention that this thread covered all 3.

EH Taylor Small Batch is what you are looking for. You can get it for $36.99 at Albertson's, $34.99 at Matherne's on Bluebonnet, or $32.99 at Costco.
Blanton's would be another good choice at $50 but I haven't seen any in BR for a while.

Since you said "decent" whiskey, bourbon is what you want and all of the choices listed are "decent". I would personally go with Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7 year.
However, if you want to upgrade to good whiskey or even great whiskey, scotch is where you should look. I would suggest Glenfiddich 15. You will need to increase your budget a little bit though. Do not skimp and get Glenfiddich 12.

If you come across John J Bowman SB ($47) buy it. You won't be disappointed imo. You can't go wrong with the other recs the fellas have made. I'm a big fan of Eagle Rare 10yr and Elijah Craig SmB12yr. Both of those can be had under $30. Have fun hunting as it is part of the enjoyment.

Did we ever get the final results of your bracket?

I picked up 2 bottles of Martin's pick, Eagle Rare yesterday. Anyone tried it yet?
Posted on 8/11/16 at 2:09 pm to wickowick
I thought it was good. It's much bigger on the front and the finish than the last pick they did which was sweet and smooth. I still have a giant bottle of that stashed away.

Sorry Guys... Been Busy..
The official SMS first annual bourbon bracket has concluded. I will be providing the results over the next few days/week.
Let me remind everyone of the rules:
Each selection had to be bourbon <$100 aftermarket
Each selection was given a number ahead of the bracket. All I was given by Mrs. SMS was the 2 numbers that were competing. I didn't receive the names until the end.
Games were played head-to-head with the scoring below.
Taste: The intensity of the taste. 40 pts possible
Finish: The quality of the finish. 30 pts possible
Complexity: How complex was the flavor: 20 pts possible
Nose: Different aromas. 10 pts possible.
The East Bracket:
WLW12:74
Henry Duyours: 64 (Bravo to Henry Duyours for making it this far)
Colorado Gold:68
Blantons: 64
This was a surprise
The North Bracket:
SAOS 7: 63
Bowman Brothers: 60
John J Bowman: 65
Savannah: 61
The South Bracket:
ETL: 71
1792 Port Finish: 67
This was a surprise. Didn't know I liked the port finish much
Jefferson Ocean: 66
4r Small Batch: 56
This was really weird. Evidently at the end of the last round I ran out of 4r Small Batch. We were able to procure another bottle. The new bottle was significantly worse than the original one. I don't know if it was the age as the former was sitting in my whiskey room for a while or just bottle-to-bottle variation.
The West Bracket:
Colorado Gold:74
Eagle Rare: 66
Woodford Reserve Double Oak: 65
IW Harper: 51

It has been a long time since I've seen these on a shelf locally.

I got a few of those RHF's on my last trip to Mississippi. Never seen them here, but it's one of my faves.
