I don't put tomatoes in gumbo. But if a tomato gumbo is what's for dinner I'm tearing it up.

This. Only a picky child thinks tomatoes in gumbo changes the dish so much it’s inedible. People hide behind “traditional” because they think it makes them cultured. Same dudes that love to point out how Tex-mex isn’t really Mexican food. Fun people.

Only children have foods that they just won't eat?

Wait not putting tomatoes in gumbo is equal to an entire different menu of foods between 2 different countries and cultures?

Only had it one time, Bar Downtown NOLA ' wasn't bad it was just a creole version is what I thought . I laughed at how many Bay leaves were in my bowl? I think it is the Corporate Bar not far from Convention center, pretty good lunch food over all.

I’ve choked on and seen a couple of others choke on bay leaves so I completely eliminated them from anything I cook.

It's not hard to pick them out before serving.

Nothing is wrong with tomatoes in gumbo, hell, put bananas in it if you like. In N.O. it is not common, but I've had it many times, it doesn't change the character of the dish, just a little different.

Pay no attention the lug nuts on this board, they will only eat things that have been prepared the same way their maw-maw made it, zero capacity for innovation. According to them jambalaya can't have can't have shrimp and tomatoes, my favorite jambalaya does, it is vibrant and very tasty. As opposed to the dull brown pork and pork Cajun variety.

This just in . . .

Louisiana health officials have confirmed that the cause of the illness that affected over a hundred people who ate jambalaya at a north Louisiana fundraiser was that SOME DAMN FOOL PUT TOMATOES IN JAMBALAYA!

Lotus Club in Mecca serves a solid seafood gumbo. Has a little diced tomato in it.

I honestly didn’t know tomatoes in gumbo was even a thing.

This isn’t some yankee confusing gumbo and jambalaya?

A look at your post history shows you make a living out of these same type comments on each and every board on this site. This shows pettiness and lack of ability for civil discourse which is normally due in large part to insecurity in ones intellect. Your incivility allows all on here to recognize how inadequate and insignificant your contributions to this forum really are.

You must really be embarrassed to realize you just aren’t as smart as anyone on this site and have to fake your way through. I’m sorry life sucks so bad and you know stepping out in front of a truck isn’t always a bad thing.

Gombo (gumbo) is a West African dish and has been since the dawn of mankind, they put all manners of things in it including tomatoes and sweet potatoes and many others I never wanted to know about, the only constant is okra.

Gumbo translates to okra in Bantu and is simply a stew that is thickened with okra.

forget the tomatoes, I think we can all agree that if you go somewhere (restaurant or family/friend's house) with an expectation of having a great bowl of gumbo and instead get served a bowl of watered down flavorless crap, this is an instant mood changer.
