I'm just stopping in here to say if Martini wants to ship me some of his gumbo, frozen, I'll be glad to have it.

It isn't how I'd make it, sure, but I've been reading that son of a gun's posts for years. I guarantee he makes good food.

Until then I'll do like I was taught, without tomato, but I know good and well that every grandma all across south LA does it different.

I have never put tomatoes in but I am all for trying it. Growing up, we put whatever we had on hand in the gumbo pot. To me, the roux, the stock and the trinity are what make a gumbo a gumbo. The rest is window dressing. I plan on giving tomatoes a try. Especially when mine start coming in this spring/summer. It's your food. Put whatever you like in it. Those that like to damn someone else's food choices are either just being contrary on a message board or are just too caught up in what they believe should or should not go in another person's pot.
