What's the best cherry for cocktails that isn't Luxardo?

Someone posted a recipe for bourbon soaked cherries here years ago. I've made a batch every summer since then, and played around with what extracts I use. It's like 1:1 simple syrup and bourbon, and I think the recipe called for a little vanilla extract. I used some of that, some orange, and then did one mixing the two together. Use the big quart mason jars to store them in. Great for cocktails watching football when they've had a few months in the pantry to soak it all in.

This sounds great! What kind of cherries are you using?

I just bought some fresh ones at Publix in the summer. They’re a deeper red color. Not sure the type. You just rinse them off and fill the jar with them and pour the bourbon syrup over them. I’m a cheap drunk most of the time so I usually have Old Forester 100 proof at home and that’s what I use. I make about 2 cups of syrup and use 2 cups of bourbon and make a big batch. You can flavor each jar differently. Just a few drops of extract in each one.

How do you think it would turn out if I used frozen cherries. I get some pretty good ones from grocery stores in my area.

what's the price comparison to luxardo? $18 for a jar of cherries is getting to be ridiculous. They were in the $14 range just two years ago, which is also a bit much. They keep on jacking up the price.

They are damn good though...
