For Italians on Thanksgiving I like Valpolicella. Amarone or Ripasso

Look into some Eastern European producers. Hungary, Croatia, Austria. Some great lighter bodied reds and spectacular white varietals (including sparkling) that will do us well on thanksgiving

Been seeing Posip (Croatian) a bunch in NOLA recently. Nice crisp white.

Both Independent and Swirl had it. I think Independent had several Croatian wines.

I have a bottle of Kathryn Hall I've been wanting to try

Hall puts out some great wines.

I haven't decided what to drink yet, probably either an Elyse Alexander Valley Zinfandel or Hill Family Estate Syrah.

I will probably consume more whiskey than wine, though.

We have a restaurant in town that sells wine by the truckload out the back door and it was one of the wines offered this week. Looks decent enough, but who knows.

We usually stock some NV like LP or Taittinger for the holidays but with my extended family coming to our house this year I'll take the savings at 20-30/bottle since they won't care.

The 2001 Chianti Riserva should be sublime to drink. People that have never had older wine just don't know what they're missing out on. That is, older wines that are meant to age.

I love older Chianti I think its an excellent choice. I was just talking about Italian wines I enjoy on Thanksgiving.

I have a 97 Barbaresco at home, a couple of early 2000s Barolo's, an 09 Rioja etc. I have a couple of 11 and 12 Pinot's I probably need to drink or should have drank already.

2012 Caymus that I need to open I was given it at as a gift, I would never buy Caymus myself.

I have a 2018 Caymus, given to me as a guilt gift from a mortgage broker who royally screwed up my refinance a few years ago. I really should open it though to toast my pre-Fed hike rate.

Made properly Pinot can age for a long time. I have about six bottles of Petit Syrah from a Napa vineyard that was sold and the vines were ripped up. Sad. It was a great wine and something not meant to age so it will soon be gone forever. It was nice to get something from Napa that wasn’t the same old, same old thing like most of them have become.

I had Caymus once and did not like it. Just a big fricking fruit bomb. I like wines with finesse hence the comment below.

No offense taken about the Italian wines. There are so many great ones.

All things considered Caymus is probably a prett average wine all around. The problem is people who are really into wine have decided Caymus is trash because people who wear loud button downs and go to Morton’s love Caymus.

There is no such thing as an evil wine.

Caymus is like the Yeti of wines.

The quality is good, but it's overpriced. Also, no one ever admits they bought it. It was always "given as a gift."

I think it would be much better received in the $50 range.

However, I will say that Caymus Special Selection is actually quite good.

Also, the 1858 Napa Reserve (made by the same vineyard that makes Caymus) is very good, and can be found around the same price as Caymus.

I say that if you like a wine, and think its worth the price, do you.

I don't mind Caymus personally. Its fine. It tastes good.

It is very overpriced though because of its popularity with the McMansion crowd. You can get similar quality and tasting wines for much lower prices, but they don't have the "prestige".

The reason why wine nerds and the like don't like it is in large part because of how they manipulate the wine. There has been a big movement for 20 years towards manipulating wines as little as possible. Natural wines and much more straight forward processes.

Caymus they want it to taste as uniform as possible so they do manipulate it a good bit. They add a lot of residual sugar, other things to stabilize it. There are allegations that they use Mega Purple (dye) to keep it the color they want (its almost certainly true). There are allegations that they have brought in frozen grapes from other areas multiple times.

Ultimately, the average consumer isn't going to give a shite about any of that. Does it taste like they want it to? If so, that's ultimately what matters.

it's $15 juice with a fancy name and marketing.

and they absolutely use mega purple, just like most "big, bold" reds that are mass distributed. the average consumer just absolutely loves sweet wine that turns their mouths purple.

Wagner and the like are just gross to me, I don't want to drink pinot that is more full bodied and less translucent than a bordeaux and I don't want a cab that tastes like diabetes.

but they print money because the lowest common denominator in the US, like with just about any industry, has shite taste.
