I learned about it from my mothers cousin many years ago. A bottle of ketchup and water was a mainstay of the hobo villages of America back then. I have come to an appreciation what my parents and grandparents endured in thier daily lives. Absolutely nothing was wasted by them, if you were a child you ate what was put on your plate without reservation as the other choice was nothing for your meal.

this is the house i grew up. you ate what was cooked, or you didn't eat at all. if you put it on your plate, you ate it. and god forbid you complained that something didn't taste good...things got ugly.
dad grew up dirt poor. he never forgot how little they had, and how thankful they were to have it. nothing he hated more than one of his kids complaining about the food put on the table.

When my dad got pissed at one of the brood you would actually prefer dealing with Satan himself.

I actully feel that I was robbed of so much of what most consider as a thing that was just there. He has been gone for 44 years, there has to have been a gold mine of things that I should have learned and don't have that blessing.

Was in BR last night. Hit up ole chimes east, miss that place. Bartenders are always on their cell phones and it pisses me off. They are very prompt w/ me b/c Ive been going there for years, but I hate when customers have to literally wave to get their attention.
I have a friend who works there and worked last night. He said someone gave him a $20 bill who wasn't even in his section because they appreciated how hard he seemed to be working.

I grew up the same way. As I got older and I didn't have to "clean" my plate anymore, it kinda backfired because I don't eat very much at a time so I'd just take the "starve" option
But I appreciate the way I was raised. The only things I dislike are maybe a handful of things that I disliked my entire life. Because I was forced to eat what was cooked, I love all veggies and stuff like that.

biggest pet peeve is people asking if i need change for cash. especially when no one every refiled my coffee even though i asked and that would mean a 60% tip. no, bitch. you didnt earn it.

I hate when people ask me that too. They don't even look in the book.. it might be a $100 bill. Bring me change no matter what. I will tell you to keep it if I want you to.
I will say this though: As a server, people would give me a $20 and four $1 bills for a bill that was $20. I'd know they wanted me to keep the change, but since they didn't TELL me to, I'd bring the change back. And then they'd look at me like I was stupid and tell me it was mine. Happened nightly. Just tell me to keep it if you want me to keep it, people!!

My biggest pet peeves when dining out deal more with patrons than they do with service.
I can't stand dining with people who complain about service unless it's really just horrid.. which to be honest, is rare. I've had ONE horrible dining experience in my life. Sometimes I have great service, sometimes it's just okay. But only once has it been horrible.
Yet somehow I've been with people who are just livid at service. It's like.. drink your drink and enjoy your dinner with ME. You shouldn't even notice service because you should be so enthralled in your company.

When I could do it I called my mom for recipes of foods that I hadn't experienced for decades. The expression of "comfort foods" is a very much under emphasized term. It is a joy to cook things for friends that are fifty year old things that when a child did nothing for you, but as your taste buds grow you realize the understated elegnce of them. The simplistic thing that we Cajuns serve is actually a derivation of Cassoulet which is a French dish that is on the menu in so many homes it is unreal

I hate when the put a damn lemon in my water or on my glass. If I want a lemon, I'll ask for one. This doesn't piss me off quite as bad arse my previously mentioned ketchup served in a ramakin.

I pretty much will not eat with most of the people I work with for this very reason. I think they really do go into a restaurant looking for things to be pissed about.
I know I joke it up in this threads, but it takes a whole bunch of bad stuff to happen for me to get upset about dining out.

This is how I am also. I try to enjoy my dining out experiences.

Along the same line as this are the Mexican places that will bring a bottle of beer with a lime stuck in the bottle as a matter of course, so your freaking beer will taste like lime whether or not you want to adhere to that inane practice.
