It was authentic enough for those guys. What are you going to find that's 100% authentic Japanese outside of NYC or West Coast?

Sushi Hayakawa in ATL. There are a bunch along the east coast (outside of NYC) also. Some in Chicago and Houston as well.

Have you been to Daiwa on the westbank?

It's not "authentic Japanese" and doesn't even pretend to be (it bills itself as "Hong Kong style sushi"). But they are doing some rather interesting things there and it's definitely a step beyond most everything else in the area these days.

I have not. I mostly eat nigiri and temaki, so I will usually only go out of my way for the modern sushi places if they seem to really care about the sourcing of their fish. From the wbesite, they are doing more interesting things than most places around here and I do appreciate that they list tilapia on their menu instead of misleadingly claiming it as red snapper like most places.

Kanno may be your best bet. Elvis was trained in Osaka and in other cuisines in California. He and his wife close the restaurant for 2 weeks each year to visit family in Japan.

I‘d have to say Kanno. Chef Elvis and his wife both speak Japanese.

Seemed nonsensical to me, but I've never thought of the place really at all, so there's that.

Agree with Kanno. It's some damn good sushi.

Just think how well it would be thought of if it was in Hollygrove and not Fat City, though!

Kanno does well despite being located in Fat City. It is like when Saffron Nola jumped from Gretna to Magazine. I have no doubt that Kanno would do better and get more recognition if they made a similar jump like they did with Nomiya.

Speaking of Kanno, those little chocolate ice cream things they give at the end are amazing.

Apparently they're still looking. Been for almost 2 years. He wants a small place and have looked around the veterans area near Shogun.

I've seen it pumped up on here before which seemed nonsensical to me. It's just a hypothesis.

Has anyone done one of Kaz's popups at Ohm Lounge? I've read it's an omakase meal but I don't know anyone who's tried it yet.

There are two this week on Thursday and Friday. $75.

I like Hana but not sure if it’s what you consider authentic.
