Even before Covid? Seems like 5-6 years ago more people were drinking than ever before and just the last 3 years or so consumption has taken a sharp decline.

Yeah, I guess my definition of "awhile" was more the years post-COVID, when indoor re-openings expanded in 2021.

Pre-COVID craft beer was quite the time with BA lotteries, lining up the night before, etc. shite, Assassin release at Toppling Goalith is a shell of what it once was and GI Prop just rots on Chicago grocery store shelves all year. Quite the departure from what we saw in the 2010s.

Yea it has mainly been the last 5 years or so that the trend has really started to show fully. You could see it some pre-covid but at that point a lot of Genz still wasn't 21 yet. There were already signs though of their decline. Millenials were holding down the fort pre-covid

Gen X too. A lot of younger Gen X born 1978-1980 were also still drinking and going to breweries.

I thought you were going to post about some of the nicer restaurants being taken over by cultural enrichment

This is very real

Went to Annabelle brasserie for the first time probably 2 years… went on a Saturday night. It was only half full, and the crowd was not what it used to be.

The breweries that have seemed to survive operate more as neighborhood bars than beer destinations with the exception of St. Arnold’s. Baileson, Eureka Heights, and Holler all seem to do well.

lone pint has done a great job competing with Art Car for the standard IPA at every resturant.

Well that’s your problem right there…the food is mid to begin with and was always just a place for the gram.

What's weird is when I first started being in Houston more, which kind of coincided with the peak-ish of the craft beer scene, around 2013-2015, St. Arnold was an afterthought for me, especially the hoppy beers. I didn't like Elissa. I preferred Hopadillo from Karbach, and then Yellow Rose came around, then Brash brought their hoppy beers.

But then, it was almost like rather than stay comfortable on their name, St. Arnold said "Game On". Art Car is a regular in my fridge with Eureka Heights MiniBawce. Hopadillo is garbage. I pick up Yellow Rose every now and then.

St. Arnold's coffee porter is really good to, and I've enjoyed their Fall and Spring bock beers alot as well. They adapted to the competition, and in my unprofessional opinion, succeeded.

Their Fall and winter beers are so good, imo. I wish Christmas ale was available all year.

Beer gardens, even if they're not a brewery, where kids can run around, are *packed* in the burbs.

That's true for Senate Ave. They have a large patio (not so much a biergarten) and often have lots of families with small kids there. I used to wonder why they close so early (9 PM) but it makes sense if their primary customer base is families with kids. Business drops sharply after 7:30-8 from my experience.

Klaus Brewing, which closed a couple of years ago may have stuck around longer if they would have had a more family friendly venue. They were out here in CyFair but in what looked like part of an industrial park with just the building and a small patio. Have to cater to families with kids out here.

11 Below on Spring Cypress in Spring TX follows the same model since they moved from their Bourgeois/Cutten location last year. The old Fortress brewery location is better set up for families/kids.They are usually doing a brisk business when I am there on random Fridays.

A lot of the same happening here. I think the biggest thing is that a lot of them made average to not great beer and when the fad started dying out people couldn’t justify paying those prices.

Outside of Saint Arnold's and a couple others.

A number of years back St Arnold’s did an expansion, my daughter’s company, Jacob’s Engineering helped. My daughter called to see if I would be back in Houston. Sorry to say, I had to be in another state. She had me a pass for Food and Drinks at the new opening! They had a great time.

this is where I go...not big at all, but is a good gathering spot...plus the wine place next door adds more options for you...
