re: What are the negatives of ceramic grills?

Don't get me wrong, I've been an avid kettle owner since the late 80's, but a ceramic grill does deliver juicier foods. Not saying it's so much better than a kettle, it just has extreme control capability. I'll never get rid of my two weber kettle, just find that I use the primo much more.

I have BGE XL at home and a pellet smoker at the lake house. Food coming off the BGE is just better - better flavor and juicier - than food coming off pellet smoker. This includes long smokes and just straight up grilling. And it’s not really even close. I’ve got the BGE XL so I have no problems whatsoever with space. The only drawback to the XL is that it does go through a lot of charcoal.

have owned a Weber Kettle for 10 years and I’ve never wished it could get hotter, I do long smokes on it without issues, there is no fire box to crack, it’s easy to move, and it was only $99.00 I genuinely don’t see what your getting over a Weber Kettle other than it’s a little nicer, is it just a luxury Weber Kettle? If so that’s cool, some people value nicer stuff and I can respect that. But I don’t see any hole it’s filling from a capability standpoint. Other cookers such as pellet grills and offset smokers are giving people different capabilities whether that’s setting a temperature and hitting start or additional capacity.
That’s awesome. I’ve never owned a kettle. When I finally got married and bought a house I went straight to a primo - no transition grill. I might have same thoughts if I did own a kettle - I know it’s a versatile grill. I just enjoy my primo and the fact I can get it to 600* degree relatively easily if I want to do a pizza or just open the fire box a bit more to get to 800-1000* for some steaks.

The ceramic firebox can be prone to cracking due to the extreme heat. The smoke flavor is not as good as other grills

I think you have to buy them in bulk, right? That's like a wholesale outfit, isn't it?

Can the XL versions hold a big arse brisket? Mine are typically 18ish lb packers.
I think space is my hold up, I have a PBC and I can do 3-4 butts at once. 2 18 lb briskets. 50 wings. 4 whole chickens.

Yup, have an XL, no issue with the largest packers.

They are heavy and can crack are the only two I know of.

And the BGE folks will replace it free of charge for life if that happens.

There is aftermarket stuff like BBQ guru that can make just about any smoker more automated. You would just have to figure that into the cost when your comparing other cookers to a pellet grill if that is important to you.

I bought my first Big Green Egg (large) in 2005. The only negatives, cooking space on a large is only 18 inches in diameter, and an egg is heavy. Upsides, it is so well insulated, a much smaller fire is required to cook food the same way you have been doing. Less air going through a cooker, the more moisture you retain. Also, when it is shut, it is sealed. With the bottom vent control and the top vent control, you have complete control of the temp. I have been barbecuing for many years, but soon after getting the egg, the same people who have been eating my cooking, suddenly started saying how good of a cook I am. The only variable being the device the food is cooked on.

All the ceramics of a big green egg have a lifetime warranty.

Pellet grills are outdoor ovens and to hear alot of folks tell it, you have to supplement smoke with a smoken tube or something like that.
None of this is true.
ETA: I take that back. If you get a decent pellet grill, none of this is true.

I haven't used or been around one of those, but I have a GMG Daniel Boone and smoke is never a problem. So maybe that level and up?
