Bouncing around in the Bourbon/Whiskey/Scotch thread, there's a plethora of choices: Bourbons, Ryes, Wheats, High ABVs, Low ABVs, etc.

It just got me thinking, what do y'all typically look for when choosing what you'll be pouring?

Known commodity
Availability
Price

There are so many small distilleries now, and maybe it's because i stopped drinking as much bourbon, but i find a large portion of the small distilleries just don't taste good and are overpriced.

I know what i like. I've tried many different types but go back to the same ones that i know taste good. Yes some on this list are hard to get, but i can usually get a bottle here and there when i run out of stock.

EH Taylor Small Batch - hands down my favorite bourbon
Blanton's - i know, it's over-hyped, but i really like it
Eagle Rare
Buffalo Trace
Four Roses Single Barrel - Barrel proof if i can find it

I think you just have to try different stuff and figure out what you like. I will buy a bottle that a lot of posters on the whiskey thread like if its available and not crazy expensive. I don't always love what other posters have loved but other times I do. I try to stay in the $50-70 range but will pay more if I've really liked other things a particular distillery/blender has put out or I've had a pour somewhere and liked it. I also will read reviews online such as breaking bourbon and watch youtube whiskey channels but again, I don't always agree with those reviews.

"Drink what you like; be careful what you pay for."

More expensive doesn't mean better. Try different things and try not to pay secondary for something that probably isn't worth the cost compared to other available offerings.

When I first started drinking bourbon, I wanted to try EVERYTHING. After getting burned a couple of times with some not so great ones (TX Whiskey comes to mind), I stick with ones I know and branch out when I hear about one from a friend. I would have never tried Longbranch on my own, but a friend got me a bottle for my birthday last year, now it's the bottle that I buy for friends.

Wife's company does business with Devil's River, so I picked up a bottle. It was OK, but I probably won't buy it again.

for me a like bigger oak flavors so i tend to gravitate towards older bourbons.

applications make a big deciding factor too.

id get some whiskeys for mixing and cocktails that i wouldnt normally buy if drinking neat.

I’ve been drinking bourbon for a much shorter period than most around here but I’ve learned that I don’t particularly enjoy rye or lower ABVs. Rare breed hits the sweet spot for me.

Setting your budget can steer you in the right direction.

I usually recommend people spend a little more when they dive in and I also recommend going higher proof. Splash a little water or some rocks. You’ll get much more flavor in these higher proofs than vise versa.

Proof, mash bill, price, description. I don't often look something up, other than looking in the list of ones I have had before (with price/notes/etc.) that I keep in my phone.

I highly recommend setting up blind taste tests with a bourbon drinking friend or 3+.

we have 6 small sample vials labeled #1-6.

fill each with a different flavor and take a pic of the order for reference.

taster will rate them in order #1-6 and then the pic will be revealed.

then that person will return the 6 vials with different flavors from his collection and return and it can go on and on.

you will soon learn if you like high proof/low proof, light color, dark color, burn finish, rye, wheat, etc.

and you will not be influenced by labels, prices, public hyped brands, etc.

I promise you will surprise yourself in your honest results.
