It is pretty dry and the icing isn't all that good. I got it shipped so maybe it is better fresh. I don't find this thing to be much better than the crap HEB sells
We usually get a randazzo's shipped and it is fine, absolutely better than any king cake i've had in Houston.

I tried a Dong Phuong this past weekend. I even questioned if it was on the dry side; however, the flavor was really good. Made me want another piece.
I do prefer a moister king cake if it doesnt have a filling.

You're missing nothing.
The very best king cakes are nothing more than dry cinnamon buns with shitty white icing.
The only thing that makes a dong phuong better is the icing is, I guess a butter cream and the cake is lighter and airier.
Otherwise, they suck. They just suck less than a traditional king cake.
The only time I eat a king cake is at work when I need to satisfy my sugar craving. There's no way I would buy one myself. If I want a pastry, I'll purchase one that actually tastes good.
If Cinnabon made a king cake, you'd have something.

Odd melt
OP, did you get a filling or regular? I had both recently and the strawberry one never really dried out. The regular was hard after 4-5 days.

What's odd is you would call an opinion a melt.
King cakes suck. That's just the way it is. And what makes them suck even worse is when granulated sugar is sprinkled on top of them.

They are very good but in the end it's a King Cake and their price tag doesn't justify it.
I bought a giant king cake at Costco for like $15 for a party. It was also very good.
I'd buy that one for $15 before I bought the dong phuong one for $40.

I've been saying this in every king cake thread... start buying traditional French king cakes. They're ×100 better than the cakes people usually eat.

Had a fresh Dong Phuong with cream cheese last night. Nothing dry, icing still soft.
I would take Pandy Fackler's opinion with a grain of salt. Doesn't like king cake. "King cakes suck. That's just the way it is."

This is true.

Look the OP wanted to know what he was missing. I answered his question.
Grain of salt or not. It doesn't matter. King cakes are dry, poorly made cinnamon buns. You have to fill them up with whatever goo suits your fancy to make them edible.
You want a good king cake? Go to Cinnabon, get a box full of rolls with icing on the side. Mix in some food coloring and drizzle that shite all over your buns.
That's 100 times better than any traditional king cake you can buy.

They are overrated as frick. They're good, but not the best. Not top 3 for me.

I understand. You answered his question on king cakes and you hate king cakes. So that helps.
You also said go to Cinnabon, which isn't in or near New Orleans at all.
Are you near New Orleans area and have access to different king cakes?

I live in south east Louisiana and have access to all of them except the perfection of Cinnabon.
Here's a good king cake recipe. Get a tube of pillsbury cinnamon buns. Make a circle out of them, bake them. Mix up some extra white icing with confectioners sugar. Add some food coloring and voila, an edible king cake.

Had one last year and it wasn’t dry. Haven’t had any this year though.
Randazzo will always be my favorite as I grew up on them. And Dong was very close to Randazzo. Close enough where I have to give them credit and put them on the same level. A Randazzo (from the bakery, not packaged in a gas station) is always moist, which is why I never understand why people like the dry king cakes.
For the people who say “it’s just a cinnamon roll”, who cares? Cinnamon rolls are delicious. You take a cinnamon roll, make it larger, make it moist, and cover it with icing…what’s wrong with that? What kind of communist doesn’t like that?
What’s funny is these trolls come to TD and try to force their views on king cake on everyone else. We like king cake but they gotta come here and pull the cinnamon roll card to try to change our minds. Well, that’s fine with me if you don’t like them because that will keep the price and the lines down for me!

Hey man, you won't get no argument outta me.
Alls I'm sayin' is this. If you're gonna make a cinnamon bun and call it something other than a cinnamon bun. Then make it taste like a really good cinnamon bun.

Like most things that are popular, it has become cool to hate on a DP king cake. That said, their cream cheese and almond cakes are the best I’ve ever had.
I was at a king cake party recently with 20+ different cakes and was hoping to find one I liked better the Dong Phuong. Still, nothing topped the DP cream cheese.
