Prejeans was great until James Graham left in the late 90s. He was an excellent chef and his wild game mixed grill was one of my all time favorite dishes.
Coincidentally he opened a restaurant after in Florida near me. I had an opportunity to talk with the man a few times before he passed unexpectedly.

Graham actually had hs own place in Laf for about 2 years after he left Prejeans. Was fantastic cuisine, but literally was located inside of a motel off of I-49.

Yes. It was Wild Game (can’t remember the final word). Damn great food, but was located in a transient motel. Ex and I mourned when he closed.

Fish and Game Grille, featuring wine sommelier Philippe. I ate Elk Wellington there. Was the second level of a two-story hotel/motel on the right side of I-49 North.

James Graham
James was 45 and in the prime of his cooking life when he tragically died ... jogging and hit by a motorist. He really put Prejeans on the map by incorporating elk, buffalo, antelope, axis deer, and other wild game into the Prejeans menu. After he left those exotic food items were slowly phased out and taken off the menu. James was special as some people you never forget

Love the place. Have had nothing bad, ever.

There are two things on the menu that I go for. 1. The French fries. I love them for some reason. 2. The pepper jack shrimp with a cardinal sauce. That sauce is really good with the shrimp. Everything else is meh imo.
all of this.
The place is meh for the most part, but the pepper jack shrimp is cardinal sauce is actually pretty legit.

Well, at least I got the “Game” part right. ??

Woods & Waters is now Mazen Grill. It’s on Johnston, just past the mall. Very good food.

Best bowl of gumbo I’ve had in my life was at Prejeans. Awesome dark roux.
Though I’ve had it other times and it was inconsistent. Still, when we’re in that area we always eat there, and it has never been bad. Not by any means on my list of top restaurants, but I like their menu and have never had what I’d call a bad meal there.
I’ve had bad meals at Landry’s and Ralph & Kacoo’s, also tourist traps, but never at Prejean’s.
This is just another case of the haughty food board doing “the food board thing”.
Years ago, Prejean's made some of the best crawfish bisque (Cajun style) and seafood gumbo. I used to stop in a buy frozen pints/quarts of it when I was in the area. I don't know if they sell it that way any longer.
All of sudden, everything changed. It just wasn't very good. Gave it some time and tried it again. Watery bisque with little flavor. Same with the gumbo. Haven't been back since, so I can't speak to what it's like now. I sure wanted it to be good again, but everyone in our party was disappointed in the meal there.
There was also a dynamite appetizer of fried eggplant with jumbo lump crabmeat and good sized shrimp with their cardinale sauce. I always ordered that with a cup of the bisque. They changed the eggplant app and it had previously frozen white flaked crabmeat and very small shrimp. I just looked at the menu online and I guess they stopped serving that at all. I don't see the crawfish bisque either.

Yet places like Prejean’s and Randoll’s stay packed busy, while good food places like Guidry’s Reef (RIP) could hardly muster half a restaurant of people.

Lafayette has always been a very fickle market. It's hard to predict what will make it and what will fail. The restaurant or bar has to have the right combination of quality, style, local name recognition and mojo.

Guidry’s Reef (RIP)
I ate there quite often when I was staying at the hotel across the street on business. I liked the old place, but I didn't order many things there. I did not care for their gumbo at all, though I recall the serving was huge. I always ordered fried crab claws and crabmeat au gratin.

I was really sorry to see it close. It was pretty crowded at lunch, but when I ate there on week nights, there weren't that many folks, but I suspected it may have been more of an early dinner place for older locals.

I never could pull myself away from ordering something different than their shrimp and crab stuff bell peppers. The stuff shrimp was awesome as well.
Don’t recall anything about the gumbo, so I guess that means while pretty good (no negative recollection of it), it didn’t wow me.

I think their patrons started to die off...literally.

Where would you go then for good Cajun food? We are headed to Lafayette in a few weeks.

Does Prejean's still feature those cheesy checkered table cloths?
quote:100% agree.
I’d eat at Prejean’s before Randoll’s or Landry’s.
