Walking out of a restaurant....

How long do you wait before you walk out of a restaurant if a hostess hasn't greeted you at the front door? I saw a couple walk out after about 30 seconds today, and they left like five year olds throwing a fit. Are they expecting too much? I have also recently watched someone walk out of a busy restaurant because it took the server 5 minutes to get to them...I have waited longer than that at taco bell for someone to talk to me on the mega phone...My rule is 10-15 minutes, I am patient...unless my blood sugar is low and then I freak out! I am anxious to know what most people do.

No way I wait that long if I have not even been acknowledged. I can't recall this ever happening though.
My pet peeve is at a restaurant with the hostess who says "the wait is ____ minutes" and looks at you like leave, stay I don't care.

No way Im waiting 10-15 minutes for someone to acknowledge me, especially at a chain restaurant. At a nicer place that I really want to eat, I will wait a little longer if necessary.
30 sec seems short, I would say around 3-5 minutes.

10-15 minutes is way too long. Should be less than 5 minutes for a hostess or a server to acknowledge that you are there.

wow, if it takes them longer than 5 minutes to come and get your drink order then that may be a sign of things to come...5 minutes is about my limit

Well a couple of weeks ago I was downtown and everything was packed. We had a show to go see in an hour and a half and we ended up at Shucks at the Belle because it was the only thing we could get a table at without a 20 min wait..
Well. We sat down looked at the entire menu. Decided on what we would eat and waited.. Nobody had even taken our drink order yet. 1 server walked by and said I will be will you in a min. few min went by and another server told us the same thing. A manager was at the table next to us going over what he was going to comp due to bad service. Then we decided to leave. We were probably there for 15 minutes. I figure the meal was going to suck anyways but wow the servers there are bad.

The wait time is secondary to how the staff handles the wait time.
A few weeks ago, I took the family to a sushi restaurant we've been to before. We walk in and see the dining room has only about 10% of the tables with customers sitting at them. No hostess is visible, but there's a fella behind the sushi bar with a female at his side. They both make eye contact with us then look away. The female chats with him briefly as she heads to the kitchen. So far, no one says a word to us. I'm looking around the dining room to see if there's someone else whose attention i can get. The same female comes out of the kitchen, looks at us and goes back in. I'm thinking about leaving at this point, coaching myself to be patient. I look at the sushi guy. He's doing nothing, but I bust him looking at us. He quickly turns away. I'm actually starting to wonder if something illegal is happening and perhaps I'm supposed to pick up on the cues. My sons appear far more patient than I am, so I keep waiting. After another minute that same female comes out again and finally greets us. I'm thrilled someone speaks English. Who am I kidding? I was thrilled someone spoke.
If it was just me there, I would have waited half the time. If someone had said, "Thanks for coming, someone will be with you in just a minute.", I would have happily waited 5 minutes with no impulse to leave.

Or maybe they were just really understaffed?
I'm more willing to wait if I am at least acknowledged and it seems like the employees are actually working/doing the best they can. If I see them having a pow-wow in the corner, then I get pissed.
If I'm completely ignored, I'll leave after about 5 minutes.
If I'm in a rush and it looks like service will be extremely slow (like in Catman's story), I'd probably leave too.
If I'm not in a hurry though, and the staff seems busy but courteous, I'd probably stay and enjoy a leisurely meal.

Why is this an excuse? You're going to reward that restaurant for being understaffed with your business?

Yeah thats a bit absurd. I wouldn't leave a restaurant for not being greeted by a hostess but if I felt like it things were taking a long time and the place didn't seem all that busy, I'd just ask the next employee that I saw what was going on.
As far as being greeted at a table, I never let my servers get anywhere near 5 minutes without greeting a table. Even at their busiest times, they have time to stop at a new table and let them know they'll be with them soon to take their drink orders and whatnot. Things like this do vary from restaurant to restaurant though. If I felt like it was taking an unusual amount of time for a server to show up I'd look around and try to find a table that got there around the same time and see how things are moving for them. From there I'd make a judgement whether its normal or I've been forgotten about/someone is slacking.

30 seconds is certainly too quick...afraid they would leave more resturants than they actually stay at...
If no one had acknowledged me, I don't think I would make it 5 minutes, though....

It is certainly not a good excuse to patronize a business. Catman just said the servers were bad, and by my response, I meant that maybe they were doing the best they could but had too much workload to provide adequate service (considering they did speak to him, just didn't get around to waiting on him).
You can be a good waiter/waitress but if someone else doesn't show up, it will affect the service you would normally provide to your tables.
My choosing to stay at an understaffed restaurant is not so much a reward for incompetent management as much as a realization that sometimes things happen that are beyond the employees' control, and I still might be able to have a decent meal there. However, if this is a common occurrence at the same place, I probably won't go back for a long time.

3-4 minutes in an ideal situation, but my SO would probably make me wait longer than that. it probably took me 2-3 hours to choose the restaurant, and she would make me stick with it. i wouldn't cause a scene, though, and i wouldn't even be angry.

I'm not a shrinking violet. I give them five minutes to tell me it will be a half hour to wait.
If not after five minutes I find someone and speak up. It's not that hard to get someones attention. You are the customer and you have the choice of eating there and allowing them to make some money or picking a place where they actually give a shite.
