Domenica has Alon as Chef/partner. At Luke, La Provence, August, Besh Steak I am not aware of a similar arrangement.

I know the la Provence structure since I saw the contract.

Luke may be just him.

Well Octavio is involved in all of them, I am pretty sure. But as far as a chef with near complete authority, that only happens at Domenica.

Went to High Hat tonight, sat at the bar with my buddy, who is a chef who just moved back here from NYC. Got boudin, and hot tamales, thought both were great. I liked how the boudin was steamed, and the pickled cucumber that came with it. I liked how the tamale wasn't super greasy, and that they had the tamale "au jus" (I don't know what it was, but that's what it tasted like) separate, so you could greasify it to your pleasing.

Got the gulf fish (drum)/green beans and shrimp, buddy got catfish platter. Didn't try his, but mine was okay. Fish was cooked perfectly, but kind of salty and the seasoning was kind of flat, just felt like it was missing something. Potatoes were great, so were green beans. AFAIK catfish platter was good.

Got fried donut with ice cream and the cornbread crust blueberry pie. Donut is made by a bakery around here (the bartender didn't know where, but she was a really good server). It was kind of yeasty, but pretty good overall, and I liked the cornbread crust on the pie.

Overall a good chill place for a Sunday night, server was good and they have a couple of Abita and Nola's on tap, and some beer from Atlanta that I had never had. I'd go back.

stopped into High Hat for the first time today. two lunch specials tempted me (desconstructed chicken pot pie and a crabmeat & watermelon salad - both sounded delicious) but I opted for the High Hat burger w/ pimento cheese.

i got it medium and it came out just as i hoped with just a slight tinge of red in the center. (she asked me if i wanted rare, med or well done; i'm assuming those are the only three temps they offer?). the pimento cheese was excellent. wasn't too overbearing and it was overloaded with it so plenty dripped onto my fries

the hand cut fries came out already salted which i loved. didn't have to do anything to them and they were excellent. burger had a really nice slice of tomato and some good pickles and the bun held together nicely except the bottom half got pretty soggy towards the end. but at least that stemmed from the burger being juicy.

the decor could use some work to give it a little more character and atmosphere, but i'm sure that will come with time. overall a really good first meal there. definitely going back and trying their catfish, tamales and maybe one of those lunch specials if they're still around.

Ancora is up next. maybe tonight.

Very casual.

TA, the whipped ricotta ap at Ancora was best thing we had.

At this early stage, Id give a slight edge to High Hat.

Ancora and High Hat are both on my to try list. How does Ancora compare with A mano for non pizza items?

Velvet Cactus has a nice patio do drink on. That's all I can positively say about it.

I actually liked the app better than the pizza at Ancora. The crust was great and all, and the pizza fine, but it didn't blow me away. I'd rather go back to High Hat for a 3rd time than go to Ancora a second time. Of course, now I live in Houston, so I guess I'm more or less screwed on this as is, fml.

Went to High Hat for dinner tonight. Really enjoyed it, over ate though.

Had a couple NOLA 7th Street Wheats.

Got the tamales as an appetizer, but there were several other things I wanted to try.

I got the Cuban sandwich for my entree and my cousin had the burger (not the one with the pimento cheese). She said hers was excellent, I really enjoyed the Cuban. Fries were really good as well.

For dessert I got a root beer float, for nostalgia's sake. It was a root beer float, it was exactly as expected. My cousin got the bread pudding, she said it wasn't all that great and didn't really eat all that much of it.

Service was great and I liked the atmosphere and setting. Overall, I definitely recommend this place and I really want to go back and try some more of the menu.

eta: After re-reading some of the thread, and noticing the mentions of the pickles, I have to say that both of us commented on how good the pickles were on our sandwiches. It was surprising, really, that they stood out as much as they did.

They really are great. The deep fried whole catfish is a winner for sure. The crabmeat and watermelon salad screams summer on a plate. I dig the place and Lauren is a great bartender/server.
