God bless them. I hope it does well. But I did find this a bit funny:

quote:

“We are decidedly not Tex-Mex,” he says. “Throughout the South, Louisiana specifically, probably 8.59 out of 10 Mexican spots are really Tex-Mex. [Vals] has a lot more traditional Mexican dishes, be it from Tijuana or from Mexico City. Our chef, who created everything, spent about a year in Mexico learning the food, the culture, the whole thing.”

The menu is tacos and a few other things one can get at 8.59 out of 10 Mexican spots in BR. And it is replacing another taco place that didn't last long. If customers rejected a taco restaurant there once, why would they accept a new one?

Hopefully, because the quality is much better. The one in New Orleans is delicious?

The one in new orleans is fine. Nothing special. Its location on Freret attributes to its success being a main area for Tulane/Loyola students. The setup is really nice with outdoor seating too.

I say this as a BR resident...I don't think much of BR has a discerning palette when it comes to tacos. And BR has about 5-6 Mexican restaurants within a 3-5 mile radius of where this one will be.

Place is fun, good food, really good tequila selection and decent bourbon selection but Cure Nola is helping with that.

The first time I went to Rock Paper Taco it was good. Second time, not so much. Third time was terrible.

I see they put a lot of money in the new place.. and a lot of work. I hope they do well. I'll go tonight.

No, that location sucks and the place will go out of business in less than 24 months.

Any "Mexican" restaurant has to make a lot of money off drinks—much more than a standard restaurant. Their success in getting people to come and drink will determine whether or not they succeed.

Tried Vals yesterday. I found the food Cilantro-heavy and there wasn't a significant amount of heat in any of the salsa sauces.

They include a "broth" in some of the tacos that literally pour out liquid when you pick it up.

There are too many good Mexican restaurants in Baton Rouge, for a place like this that doesn't bring the heat and serves soaking wet tacos. Disappointing.

And probably their closest direct competition that also serves more authentic Mexican, less Tex Mex offerings with a la carte tacos (and much more) is less than a quarter mile down the road....Blue Corn and its well established and excellent. I wish them luck but I have a hard time seeing them pack that space with diners with such a limited menu.

I feel badly for them because they clearly invested a lot of money in the space and worked really hard to create a nice space that has a Palm Springs vibe. They have time to develop the menu, turn up the heat and stop the tacos from leaking onto the plate. But they better do it quick.
